and technically bands like as i lay dying CAN be replaced its just hardly any new bands want to carry their torch so i feel compelled to hype the fuck out of whatever they put out next.

ok as long as you recognize the pure hypocrisy there. If Tim got his way, his ex-wife would literally be 6 ft underground right now and a couple kids would have no mother. Yet you're gonna talk shit about Lacey constantly because he solicited nudes from a 16 year old when he was like 23. This world is ass-fucking-backwards sometimes.
Also, implying that Brand New is easily replaceable but AILD almost isn't...that's just silly.

And shitty people doing shitty things notwithstanding, Brand New at their worst is less replaceable than AILD. Parkway Drive, All that Remains, AILD...
Generic aughties melodic Metalcore at its finest
|

Brand New at their worst is boring 00s pop punk though, so...
I like this band a fair bit but if I had to swap them for, say, The Veils, Modest Mouse or Broken Social Scene, I'd have no regrets

That’s my point. YFW and Deja blow but I’d take that over any number of replaceable 90’s melodeath wannabes

Can't argue with that

To be fair, Late era brand new just rips off Modest mouse like Nirvana ripped off the Pixies. so to replace BN with MM isn't that much of a stretch.

They just simply do that style of music better imo
Just like how nirvana did it better than pixies. There’s nothing wrong with riffing off someone else as long as you do it well and make it your own.

yeah I'd argue that none of these are "ripping off" their predecessors

Fair point, but kurt did explicitly say that nevermind was just him stealing pixies' stuff. Cant remember where I found it tho. All four are amazing anyways

Eh I’m indifferent toward Nevermind but I’ll defend in utero until the day I die
Regardless I feel like Kurt always had a very self deprecating sense of humor, I don’t think he meant that quite as literally as everyone takes it

@ButtBoy: Yeah I do recognize the hypocrisy. AILD can be replaced, but will they is the question? Since it's dead hard to find newer acts carrying their torch or adding a new spin to their sound, it's definitely a lot harder to replace them than Brand New from my experience. I get it if you don't want a new era of bands like that too, I'm just salty that the scene of one of my favorite genres is mutating into something that I have to be VERY picky when choosing from because I don't have enough time to waste on music I might not like.
|
| |
brand new is so much harder to replicate than as I lay dying lmao. that being said, I'm of the opinion that both bands can, and should, be replaced.
making bands whose members do awful things fade into obscurity is probably for the best of the people in the band, and the music industry as a whole in my opinion. I think you should have to meet a moral standard to be accepted relevant member of the music industry, and its not like not being famous is gonna ruin Jesse's life. People get kicked out of the NFL for much much less.

Ideally ye they should be replaced. If the scene wasn't mutating itself in a direction I'm not a fan of, I probably would be boycotting AILD right now.

The thing is, the less bands in that vein we support, the less incentive for newer acts to carry their torch because it sends a message to them that the sound of the old is not worth preserving. The reason Greta Van Fleet are Zeppelin ripoffs is because Zeppelin's legacy is already impenetrable.
|
| |
not sure I agree with that. as a musician, I honestly feel a strong urge to recreate the music on this album for instance, because I want people to hear the sounds they were capable of, without associating them with brand new
