Then you have albums like Close to the Edge, Fragile, Moving Pictures, Aqualung, etc. which also sold more than Snow Goose. I have to imagine In the Court of the Crimson King did as well, considering it was certified gold in the US and UK, not to mention all the other countries it was certified in

'Ok thats cool for you, but a large portion of their fanbase aren't forum nerds that scour the world for obscure prog bands. Most opeth fans only know about camel because akerfeldt has repeatedly repped them.'

to be fair you're not entirely wrong - depends on your perspective / background. I mean, I did know about Camel but have only recently gotten into them myself. If it wasn't for Opeth whole legions of would-be fans may have missed Camel, or not been bothered enough to check them out. In old prog spheres they're certainly popular and reputable, but yeah. In an internet age overall 'popularity' is often completely skewed and doesn't necessarily represent the wider world.

tl;dr: essentially it 'depends'. Copout.

The bigger Q: should be how many people checked Comus because of Opeth's homage / ref to them? I think they maybe count as fairly obscure?...

Serenity Painted Death has Opeth's best ever riff, arguably.

You know which one I'm talking about...

Moonlapse Vertigo is so underrated as well, hardly ever see any love for that one.

Yeah every time I put Opeth on after some months abstinence, it always hits me that it's probably the best metal ever.

Unf I belong to the minority who don't think this is one of their best, but thankfully that discussion is over and we need never have it again.
