Time to ditch the wedding rings and make a bolt for freedom and true acceptance in this life.
We hate Brand New and we're proud.

I feel like the style the band does on this album is my favorite they've done, even though I might slightly prefer Boxer for the feelings it gives me and the nostalgia of listening so much when I began college in a big city.

I love how lush and elaborate the arrangements are on this one.

Yeah, and some disagreed the last time I said this, but I still feel like this is their most optimistic and upbeat record.

Yeah, I gotta disagree with that. None of them are optimistic or upbeat really.

Though I guess in a twisted way this one is sort of satisfied with its sadness; it's come to grips with it and isn't necessarily sad that it's sad. But I wouldn't call that optimistic, lol; in a sense that makes it the saddest of all.

This one cuts to the core of hopelessness, depression, disjointed isolation, paranoia, fear and dissolution but other than that it’s a right ‘ol barrel of laughs.

Compared to their other albums this is way less depressing. The only songs on here that sound as sad as they usually are to me are Sorrow and Afraid of Everyone. This is certainly more uptempo and energetic than TWFM, no one can deny that.
Vanderlyle has a resounding, sing-a-long chorus, Little Faith is massive and energetic, Anyone's Ghost isn't sad, Bloodbuzz and Conversation 16 are very driving and cathartic, England builds to a huge crescendo.
Alligator, Boxer, and TWFM are darker overall than a lot of this imo

None of this things make this not depressing though, especially when paired with the lyrics. See my comment on the previous page too if you didn't.

How is a song with the lyric "You said it should tear a kid apart / It does" not sad?

Their lyrics are almost always sad, but that doesn't always necessarily equate to sad music, a la The Smiths.
Also I'm not saying this isn't a sad or depressing record, because of course it is but the surrounding albums they've done are all sadder imo and this has the most uplifting musical moments of all their albums since Alligator. Compared to mainstream rock this is obviously still pretty morose and experimental, and very deep.

'Alligator' is more optimistic.
'Sad Songs' is, err, well the title...it's conventionally alt country style depressing.
Overall I'd say this is the most depressing...well, this or 'Trouble'

This has sorrow and so automatically wins.

Agreed about Sad Songs.
Trouble is like the most depressing album ever. Sleep Well Beast is more uptempo, but still plenty of depressing and experimental moments.
Boxer and Alligator have that dark, very mature, sometimes post-punk sound that always seemed darker and heavier to me than this, so by default this is their lightest for me. Like I said it's still plenty depressing and anxious sounding.
Can't comment on the debut cause I can't remember a thing about it.

It has sunglasses and a swimming pool on the cover - it can't be dark.

The last three songs on here are one of the best 3 song runs I've heard on any album.
