yeah unless akerfeldt has an epiphany and remembers how to write tasteful and memorable songs again, this will be their last good album

I tried really hard to forget this was an Opeth album (& fortunately succeeded) as it's actually really good. Yes, some of it is awkward & it's more derivate in places than 'progressive' but they couldn't just churn out the same album forever. Bands evolve & sometimes their sound becomes something less revolutionary, so what?
It seems weird defending this when my score is almost bang on the average but this is a high 3.5 (my scores aren't overly generous) & there's a wide range of opinions in the comments section.

Listened to this again after some time and god, do I love this album. Nepenthe is one of my favourites off this and I just adore the guitar tone, while the bass sound is huge. Drumming spectacular of course. Reallly, really, really good album, can't see why people discard it.
And Slither is indeed very similar to Kill the King, by Rainbow.

Agreed Myth. Personally I've grown to love this almost as much as their classics in the 6 years since I first bought and listened to it on release day, when I was much more lukewarm about it. There's been no other album I've listened to so often for so long where my opinion grew as much from an initial reaction.
It's not like I ever felt obligated to love it just because it was by Opeth; I just stayed open-minded, and my love for this happened very slowly & naturally, as it needs to for some albums that are as challenging and divisive as this.
It has a really warm and aged atmosphere that helps too, I'm sure largely credited to the guitar tone and how everything came together. The chemistry and playing of the rhythm section is also among the best I've heard in recent music, like on The Lines in my Hand.
Nepenthe, Folklore, Marrow of the Earth, I Feel the Dark, and Haxprocess are amazing, but every song is so good for different reasons.

this album is so fucking good. it really reminds me of Storm Corrosion. it was their last classic album imo so it's oddly fitting that their heads are hanging from a tree... they're kind of dead to me after this

Mmm nah some of the lyrics let this down a little, but just revisiting after a while I don't find it quite as magical as i once did. Normally a 5 for me will still hold its magic and power even if I know all the sections. Some progressions from section to section hold a slight touch of gimmick novelty, which in this case subtracts genuine emotion and doesn't age well. For this album i am being very nit picky, but this became much more apparent in their latest two releases.

Most def. Lyrics aren't everything no and definitions aren't musical, but they are a component of the art presented so I don't see why I shouldn't consider them.

I don't know, I find their last 3 to be about equally boring unfortunately : (
This one slightly less so if I had to pick.

Rating bump... maybe listening to the uninspired, borefest that was Pale Communion helped me appreciate this one a little more upon returning. Definitely under-appreciated.

Yeah, his performance takes this album on a whole other level. The Lines In My Hand in particular would probably just be okay for me if it weren't for that insane drive behind it due to all that stuff going on with the drum kit

This really is a unique album; even if it were released in the 70s, sure it'd fit in with other folksy and heavy prog rock albums of that time, but it really has a unique tone and feel to it. Really warm, medieval, occult at times.
As JT has said, Pale Communion is more influenced by 70s prog. While this is too to an extent, it really has more distinct feel and originality to it, like the previous albums.
