This tells me you haven't read half of what I've said in this topic. As I have said many times already, I believe in a God, but I am not adhering to any organized religion. I'm not a Christian, but I was brought up in a Christian household, Christian family, Christian schools etc. I've seen it all from close by and did not like what I saw. Organized religion is a (big) problem in the world. Not just in the US. Faith itself is not the issue. I stand by that. Take my words for what they are and don't make an imaginary adversary out of it.

You're welcome. I choose to believe that you are in fact curious, so I will try my best to explain. Christianity differs greatly in different parts of the world and there's many denominations. The biggest two groups are catholics and protestants. Catholics believe that Mary is holy and pray to her. They also believe that many people that have lived and had exceptional virtue, according to the catholic church, are holy. Protestants believe that Mary was just a human like us and don't consider anyone holy besides the holy trinity. In the Enlightenment era in Europe, churches were raided and all statues of supposedly holy people were broken down. Protestants stand by that one should not make any figure of anything in heaven, hell or somewhere in between and worship it. This is supported by the Bible. Catholics choose to ignore that part of the Bible. Protestants were prosecuted by the catholic church for many decades and killed en masse. In the 80 years war in The Netherlands, the catholic Spanish tried to impose catholicism in the entire country forcefully, for example. They failed to do so. Catholicism is practiced mostly in the south of the country nowadays.



Despite pretty much everyone being Christian in the Golden Century (~1600-1700), the Netherlands was extraordinarily liberal during this time. Freedom of faith/religion or the lack thereof for example, was included in the constitution (the ground work for which was laid in 1579) and has remained there ever since. Since the start of the Golden Century, nobody has been prosecuted in The Netherlands on grounds of religion or lack thereof. We have had a separation of church and state since 1796. Again, nearly 100% of society identified as Christian at the time. Homosexual physical contact was legalized in 1811. The extremist/fundamentalist Christians you see in the USA and Brazil, among others, with their signs that say you will burn in hell if you don't repent and such we have sporadically seen in The Netherlands. Hate the sin, love the sinner has apparently not reached this people or they ignore it to justify their actions.
