The experimental tag on Poppy's page is very apt, especially for Negative Spaces and this album, completely game changing and revolutionary bodies of work

Don't really think that "game changing" or "revolutionary" are accurate to describe Poppy's work, let alone this album. She's obviously talented and has highly enjoyable albums and she's quite experimental and genre-shifting when it comes to her output. But I wouldn't say her work is revolutionary, really; she's just an artist with obvious love for pop and metal stylings (and a knack for mashing the two) and continually gains traction as one of the leading forces in modern pop-metal and metalcore, which is cool (!) but not like singular or "unlike anything else out there"

But really happy you're enjoying this @Verdr — you're obviously seeing something in this that I'm not (and this isn't growing much at all to me)

Are the revolutionary bodies of work in the room with us right now?

Nah magazines says she pushes boundaries so it must be right. What the hell does a user on sputnik know compared to a magazine anyway, they have the real knowledge right?

I'm a Poppy fan but even I wouldn't call anything of hers "revolutionary." I do think there's been times in her career where you could argue she pushed some boundaries, but certainly not with her recent stuff.

I could see it being a lot more impressive if you are only exposed to mainstream metal

This album is the very antithesis of game changing or revolutionary. In fact, that’s my biggest strike against it. It’s too generic, and very derivative of her previous album (which I happen to think is her best album — apparently she did too lol).

I miss the days when it seemed like each album was a unique journey into some new genre/sound. I miss not knowing what to expect next. Which is why I hope she moves on from this style of Jordan Fishcore sooner rather than later.

Yeah, even as somebody that likes this there’s literally nothing “new” being done here. Or Negative Spaces for that matter. I think it’s just executed very well and Poppy’s got a good voice and really knows how to write a catchy hook. To me this is exactly how pop metal should be done.

Also I just find it respectable that she’s covered so much ground artistically in her career. I mean, she’s been making music for what, like 10 years? And with 7 albums (and however many EPs) she’s gone from synthpop to alt rock, jumped over to some chaotic metalcore with that EAT EP, alt metal with I Disagree, and then got a little heavier with these last two records without losing that pop edge.

She’s really built an impressive discography with a lot of variation but I’m also not gonna sit here and act like all of it is super original, she just puts her own spin on it. And again, I think she’s got a great voice and a pretty vicious scream, so all of that helps carry the weaker moments on her records imo.

It’s kinda crazy, for years I just thought she was a novelty act until I saw her open for Avenged Sevenfold and was blown away the fuck away, then that Knocked Loose collab dropped not long after, and I’ve been a pretty big fan ever since.

Yeah this has officially grown on me. I no longer feel like it’s “Negative Spaces but worse”.

The Wait through the final track is damn near brilliant and sequenced so well. All of them flow perfectly into one another and each has a distinct identity. Especially If We’re Following the Light. Really one of her best songs ever, almost has a sludge metal tinge to it. We need more pop sludge / post metal.

And closing on a heater like Empty Hands was a ballsy move imo. After halo I was certainly expecting a ballad to close things out, but nope, it’s one of the heaviest songs on the record and has some of the best riffage for sure

If We’re Following the Light rules, agreed.

This grew on me too. I've ended up listening to it quite a bit. Just a good casual jam with a few strong standout tracks.

fuckin A man, I’m def gonna see her live this summer, hopefully it’s mostly this and Negative Spaces, the only time I saw her was not long before that dropped. I’d love a track off EAT too but I’m not gonna hold my breath

dude the title track is so fucking killer, truly an insane way to end an album like this

I like tracks like Ribs and Unravel but an EP of just straight up metalcore ragers like that is what I need rn

However for me this is very low quality. in regards to AOTY the surprise of Neurosis and double Converge, itll be a tough battle out there

Gotta toss Poison the Well in the hat too.

Nothing else like it? Bruh, come on lol.(2)

Loooollll, I’m starting to feel like we’re being trolled here.

That said, maybe I should give this another whirl (and I’m not basing that on “revolutionary works of art” dude, lol.
