I do get why people are having a negative response to it given her previous albums but, I dunno, I still like listening to this album.
Defo not satirical, though. XD this is the woman that wore a vagina suit in one of her videos...

And you don’t think she was satirizing any problematic western views by wearing a vagina suit?
|
| |
@robertsona Yeah dude, that's a really interesting point to chew on. Some people get away with it more than others.
So much factors into that, too. Power dynamics, balance, personality and so on. You gotta be really likeable to brag in a way that gets everyone on board.
People are less inclined to sing the praises of Jake Paul when he tells us all how great he is. Fine line between endearing confidence and arrogance.
|
| |
(Actual question, I have not seen the video)
(My point simply being you can obviously have a sincere message behind satire)
|
| |
@Potsy
No. The song is called Pynk and it's pretty much entirely about how much she loves... well, wink wink.
I just think she's overtly sexual in her expressions sometimes. She can be earnest and romantic too but sometimes she just likes to talk about things that make her go hmm. XD
|
| |
Fair enough. I just see projects like this that get a knee jerk from a certain very male audience and have to wonder “is there a crucial subtext that is being missed”.
Hence why I’m not looking to take said audience’s word for it
|
| |
I think it would seem satirical maybe as a once off quip but the frequency with which she employs this embrace of her sexuality to me feels beyond satire. I'm more inclined to believe she is just celebrating her sexuality and not necessarily at the expense of some other expression.
I see where you're coming from. Though I do think Janelle just embraces overt queer representation in her music and imagery.

Hey brother can you save my soul from the devil?
Say is it weird to like the way she wear her tights?
And is it rude to wear my shades?
Am I a freak because I love watching Mary?
Hey sister am I good enough for your Heaven?
Say will your God accept me in my black and white?
Will he approve the way I'm made?
Or should I reprogram, deprogram and get down?
-so she’s kinda been like this even when she was good. But also with a more interesting message? And an Erykah Badu feature! God QUEEN is so good
|
| |
@joe I’m definitely not calling into question the queerness
|
| |
I think Archandroid and Electric Lady are a little different. More about oppression and the politics of sexuality rather than what she did in this album and her previous one.
These ones tend to be less about oppression and more expression. Less "I love watching Mary's tights" and more "me and Mary doing it every night"
|
| |
@Potsy I get that. Just that I don't think this queer expression is the way it is as a satire of heterosexual imagery, either. It's really more earnest, I think.

I suppose it gets exhausting to constantly preach about the politics relating to your minority status and sometimes you just wanna express yourself in a purely positive way. I get that that’s kinda what this album is doing…I just wish it was more engaging

The hook where she says they’re about to make a whole lot of money is really catchy
|
| |
@ars/joe yeah it’s a shame in this instance purely because it means that a cursory listen is enough to ascertain how mediocre it is
|
| |
Feels like a natural progression to me. Earlier on, her works were a lot more reserved. Honest but not as outwardly embracing as she is now.
I like it, personally. Though yeah, conceptually, her earlier works are really interesting.
For me, this album does exactly what it says on the tin and I like it. 👍

| |
Well, I wouldn't say it's mediocre personally but to each their own.
|
| |
I would hella

Trust me that this is a way better discourse now than when dirty computer came out even though that album following AA/EC in terms of stylistic approach and lyrical content only somewhat balances out this album’s other relatively provocative qualities in terms of shock value at the time. Channing Freeman made a good comment in the staff forums that amounted to shakespeare’s methinks the lady doth protest too much: a lot of users up in arms about how not up in arms they were (usually about the sexual lyrics)
|
| |
I like it a bit more than that but I totally get it. It's her least ambitious album, for sure. Though, again. I think it's exactly what it needs to be.
@robert lol I can't even imagine. XD
