Yeah, but listen again and ask yourself if it actually sucks

"Hardwired definitely had more energy than this. In fact, every Metallica album had more energy than this. Even Lulu had more spark to it."
i guess im in the minority, but i have NO idea how people seem to agree on this. this album has way more creativity than hardwired. i checked out hardwired a few nights ago and holy SHIT was it a slog to get thru. everything on disc 2, minus "spit out the bone", sounds the exact same. just boring, repetitive, lifeless. James Hetfield had a gun put to his head when he wrote Hardwired.

@deathschool
I wrote the review. I listened to this a dozen times before it even came out. I'm old, I like this. It is what it is.

Oh okay. I didn’t check whose review this was. You’re allowed to like it. Everyone else that thinks they like it needs to listen again and think about their life choices.

I stopped liking Metallica on the black album tbh, Until it Sleeps was the last song I really liked if we go on a stretch, so I don't think I'm gonna love this one. Still, like I said, I like the opener and Lux Aeterna at least, so it's safe to say I may dig one or two more tracks, but the album's dense so I'm gonna take it in small doses.

Ngl, this is slightly growing on me now. Still not a fantastic listen by any means, but there's some really solid stuff to be found here imo. The big highlights for me are the t/t, Screaming Suicide, You Must Burn, Lux Æterna, Chasing Light, If Darkness Had a Son, and Inamorata. Still not completely sold on Crown of Barbed Wire like a lot of others are; it's just a bit too repetitive and uneventful for me. And Sleepwalk My Life Away is downright terrible, probably one of my least favorite modern Metallica songs. Idk, I'm somewhere around a 3.3 or 3.4 at the moment

I came back to it and it's not too bad. It has to be done in small doses one or two songs here and there. Crown of Barbed Wire is one of my go-to's as well, reminds me of Load days. The following Chasing Light is also growing on me

Most of this sounds very simplistic, which is fine. Perhaps they’re writing songs that they know they’ll be able to play in the live setting when they’re well into their 70’s.

I don't know if you're joking or not, but you could be right. If they plan on taking Metallica til death, they need to start making more songs that can play until that time.

If I know Lars they're not retiring anytime soon. Agree that he's so much more than their drummer he's their Steve Harris

Lars's contributions to Metallica are definitely understated. He has songwriting credits on almost every single song for a reason. His and James's arrangement skills back in the 80s were very on point and at that time Metallica were the strongest songwriters in thrash metal.
@Willie
I get what you're saying, but even for them just trying to rock I found this underwhelming. All the songs lack dynamics or really even many riffs for me to latch onto. The better songs on Hardwired weren't amazing (though Spit out the Bone is pretty fucking good) but I could see how they could have really kicked ass with a good editor in the room. Listening to this, I was just totally bored. But of course, music is subjective.

The Metallica album is surprising, full of novelties, innovative effects and new ways of expressing themselves. One should not expect to hear things from the 80s again and compare it with Hardwired. One must see 72 Seasons as a new Metallica, from the 72 Seasons era. This album presents unique elements that no previous work of the band has achieved, while keeping the essence of Metallica. However, to appreciate it properly, it is necessary to listen to it with good headphones. I can't wait to see them at the Grammy next year. It's interesting to note that, thanks to their performance at the Grammy, Lady Gaga fans got to know Metallica songs, like Halo On Fire haha! And what about the song YOU MUST BURN! Exclamation point! It has an incredible intro and it seems like someone is coming to destroy everything. This song would be great in a movie. I still listen to the new songs trying to guess what will be Lars' next drum beats sequence on the snare, which is nostalgic for those who notice these things. Who is singing in the interlude of You Must Burn!? This is very good. Unfortunately, at the album preview, I agreed with the bad reviews due to the poor distribution of the music in the room, which did not allow hearing all the details as it should. It was only possible to appreciate it with better quality using headphones. However, I am already seeing Lars making a lot of timing mistakes in Lux Æterna in this new tour hahhhahah! The negative point of this album was the lack of slower songs, like in Halo On Fire on the last Hardwired. The album is quite intense, without many pauses. Metallica became huge by releasing slower songs between one part and another of the album, as well as in the middle of the songs. This is how you create the desire to listen to the entire album several times, due to these variations in rhythm. A great example is "Room of Mirrors?" It would be incredible as a ballad. The solo in this song would fit perfectly with a softer song. But overall, the Metallica guys made a great effort for the result of this album. It was possible to hear well and not ironically the best songs of the album were those that when you read the name you already think you're talking about the devil, and that's not a negative point. Inamorata was a great choice to end the album. All fans mentioned this song a lot, which brings a slower part and in the end has a cute farewell from the album.
