New song is good stuff. Best they've sounded since Domino the Destitute

Post-Afterman Coheed has operated more on the buttrock paradigm than their proggy emo roots (I still love it though lol), likely due to Claudio writing more on a piano/synth, but the two Vaxis III singles really harken back to when the band sounded more like a unit.

really enjoyed the new single
should give this album another go at some point

I did just that. It has a handful of great vocal melodies and a bunch of nonsense in the middle of the album

the end is unfortunately self indulgent wank on this too and no stronger than the middle
actually really enjoyed the newest song though, massive step up from the MCR ripoff one. guitar breakdown is some prime NWFT shit

upon doing a discog run-through, I think I somehow gained a newfound appreciation for every album of theirs except Color Before the Sun, which was worse than I remember and was already their worst by a country mile lol

Super excited for Vaxis III, seeing as I absolutely loved this one. Color Before The Sun was definitely one of their weaker efforts, but to this day "Atlas" remains a tremendous song.

Oh, totally agree. "Atlas" is honestly among their best tracks ever and I think "Island" and even "Young Love" round out what is still an enjoyable experience, but much of the album seems strained for ideas and I think the band was really grappling for meaning on what Coheed is divorced from the story.
Well, turns out.... the band does work better attached to a story lol They need stakes to drive them forward and keep the fire alive.
I was actually kinda shocked by how confessional Afterman is, despite being cloaked in its absurdist narrative. While "Atlas" is stragithforwardly about how much he loves his newborn son, that love almost shines through even more on Vaxis II as he gives his son's story stand-in godlike powers to clearly parallel his real-life autism. The final song on here makes me well-up a bit because you can tell how much he just adores his son and finds him to be the greatest human out there, even through the hokey hoedown and sci-fi bleep blooperies.

Shame the mixing on the album version of Atlas absolutely blows. I do like the song but it gives me a massive headache for some reason. The acoustic version is so much better. Young Love was the true gem of TCBTS for me.

Looks like it is time for my bi-annual watch of Neverender.
The new single is good stuff.

I honestly pretend TCBTS doesn't exist. The band sounds like a shell of themselves on it and I've never liked any of the songs off it enough to relisten to them.

In a way, it doesn't since it's the only album to not have any sort of story lol
The band definitely seemed like they were in a bit of a lull and struggling on that album. I think the only song that makes me angry in their discography is "Here to Mars" because it is just such a lazy and shameless ripoff of their own Here We Are Juggernaut

I actively have skipped listening to TCBTS based on everyone elses assessment and one of my favorite things about coheed is the overarching concept.

As someone who professes Coheed as his favorite band, I tried to listen to TCBTS the other day and made it to Colors before getting bored and turning it off. Really incredible that they rebounded off of that with the Vaxis albums.

From Here to Mars also pissed me off. They sounded like a generic Walmart version of themselves for a lot of that album.

I don't even think I could him the Colors melody despite having just listened to it lol

Here to Mars is easily my favorite song on TCBTS, and just one of my fav Coheed songs. Definitely far from my favorite Coheed album overall though. I'd probably rank it just above YOTBR. Or maybe just below. Hard to say.

Have to admit I like the cheese in Here to Mars

Coheed is back with full '80s cheese on the new song Someone Who Can.
Can't say I'm someone who cares for it.

I like the song! It's incredibly cheesy but dammit, I'm a sucker for that stuff
