Heaven and Hell has emerged as my favorite here. The devil lay down part followed by the gospel choir gives me chills every time.

I do wish he'd just avoided the whole situation through labeling or metadata division or whatnot but whatever, easy to ignore them yah

I see you settled on a rating. 4 seems about right, think overall this is on par with Pablo. The critical reception for this album is pretty hilarious - that independent piece is easily the most cringe review of 2021

I didn't read it but the Pitchfork review looks like they went to the nearest community college with a liberal arts program and said "if you fucking hate Kanye West and don't care about music, come with me"

Pablo has higher highs and I probably like it a bit better but this is incredibly consistent in quality (which is like 7.5-8/10) for me over 23 tracks and I even think it sort of has a sonic cohesiveness, which makes it weirdly fitting as a tribute to someone (his mom; even nasty lyrics excluded, imagine, say, the life of pablo as a tribute to someone who passed) even though it's not really that much About her. "jail" is kind of a fakeout but re-proves his pop songwriting (not rapping, not producing/sampling) chops and tbh is probably my favorite song. I mean you could say you don't think he wrote it but it kinda sounds like other songs he's written so whatever. the album is really good

the melody on "single life ain't so bad" is so good. and on "guess who's going to jail tonight!" and the aforementioned "don't you curse at me on TEXT why you tryna hit the FLEX"

I just remember my brother saying active musicians never get out of multi-album ruts (essentially that was his argument?) and I was like Noooooo and now I've been vindicated. he even makes good use of the most obvious kinda boring sample choice ever (the beginning "doo-wop (that thing)"

Pablo does have higher highs, songs like Real Friends, 30, and Father are noticeably better than almost every song here, but yeah this does have a surprising sonic cohesiveness to it considering its length. It feels distinct from his other albums, which I suppose is true of all Kanye, whether good or bad. Jail definitely needs more love, that's top 3 here for me, with the other 2 probably being Hurricane and Jesus Lord.
The reactions to this are weird to me because I was ready to dehype it after his last 2 albums (his album before this in particular is such a piece of shit), but this is pretty comfortably one of my favourite albums of the year. Not everything lands though and that holds true of Pablo too -- I know everyone loves Come to Life and Moon but those tracks do absolutely nothing for me

I still don't get the No More Parties hype. That song is decent but I could live without it

I find kendrick's too offputting somehow but kanye's verse is one of my favorites of all time. beat is fine

This is definitely more cohesive than TLOP, Ye, and Jesus is King as a whole as long as you ignore the Pt. 2's.

JiK is the lowest bar Kanye has ever set. I just listened to it again the other night and I still don't enjoy a single song
