Nobody's claiming that Suffocation didn't lay the groundwork for BDM, just that Defeated Sanity aren't an "imitation" of them (and that they're better)

I dont agree that they're better personally
Both bands are god-tier. Ultimately in the history of dm and bdm, suffocation is more "important" obvs
I do agree that these guys are far from an imitation tho

But I stand by my statement that while psalms and chapters are close, effigy is the best thing either band has done

I'm confident this will raise to a 3.9, maybe even a 4. There are a lot of 4.5 for a new release, even when the album was 6 months old it had a lot of 4.5s

who's gonna rate it to make that happen

This seems like a more reasonable point of view than claiming these guys are mere imitation - artists can have influences without resorting to imitation and the two bands are pretty distinct.
Yes BDM ultimately came from Suffocation initially (I'm not claiming to be an expert in this sub-genre, but that's pretty clear). Whoever's 'better' is a matter of preference (obviously), but one band shouldn't be ruled out simply because they're not the forefathers of the genre.

I don't know that I agree with the preference (yet), but I can definitely see it. One thing I will say is it indicates actually having a modicum of personality, so fair play to Jac.

Suffocation>Defeated Sanity. Agreed that both rule and this band isn't a straight imitation by any means. Internal Bleeding is one of my favs in bdm but they get no love round these parts and it's a shame. Same for Mortal Decay. Band rules so much

very pleb to reject the most generic of takes

I just listened to Effigy of the Forgotten. Wicked stuff! Not sure what to rate it but I can see how it’s a seminal album and how it helped define bdm.
This and Chapters of Repugnance are better albums

listen to pierced too

pierced is the GOAT so listen to that one.
and i just want to clarify that i dont think this band is an imitation, just that suffocation did it first AND, in my humble opinion, did it better.
but i mean this was my AOTY for 2020 so i obviously like both. lille gruber is a once in a lifetime level musician.

i think it would be boring if everyone had the same opinion on everything

Agreed on opinions. Gained a new respect for these guys when I saw them live a few years back. Can't remember who they were opening for but the crowd wasn't into them and I was kind of disappointed in my city that night lol

Consider me King Pleb. No disrespect to Suffocation, their first 3 albums are killer and they were very important. But, I listen to most DS albums more than all of Suffocations albums combined.
