The argument can be made that it's nice to be simplistic and not have too many options. Although I do understand the frustration when an album doesn't feel like a 4.0 or a 4.5, and other sorts of dilemmas like that.
I personally haven't heard the best things about RYM's community so I admittedly don't know how their rating metric works.

I just keep up to date with the Ethereal Black Metal facebook page because it's the only one not monetized or run by idiots. actually there are more, but that one focuses on new and smaller releases so there's a lot of cool weird stuff, not just black metal.
