"Epicloud is his best album"
Oef that is a hard one to swallow. Did they even listen to City/CoC/Ghost/Ocean Machine etc. Yet I do enjoy Epicloud more than most. There's a lot of great songs on there. The rerecording of Kingdom is better than the original imo, also Where We Belong, Grace and Hold On are all great songs. The problem is that the rest is pretty forgettable.

Yeah, there are some great moments on it, but as an album it fell pretty flat. I don't think any of his big dumb pop albums could be counted among his best work. Even though I enjoy the shit out of Sky Blue. Addicted is probably the most well thought out example of that sound, though that's probably because it doesn't go full cheese.
Honestly, I think it's just because they're pretty entry level fans who are still on the mainstream end of metal appreciation. Devin isn't exactly everyone's cup of tea, especially the more complex stuff. Epicloud is a pretty easy going album. The same group is giving this album rave reviews though. I have my suspicions that's just because the podcast the group is for gave it a good review too however.

You should direct them to Casualties of Cool ;). Actually that kinda goes for you too @DoofDoof. Wonder if you dislike it as much as this, since its a completely different beast that you might enjoy a lot more.

'Science is still subject to the philosophical concepts that state it's impossible for anyone to truly experience anything objectively.'
Just seemed like the 'flat Earth' analogy - and to be taken seriously in a debate it is always best to avoid siding with the people who believe the Earth is flat (or sky might not be blue, same thing).
This is 'Day 1: Arguing Your Point on the Internet' stuff.
Anyway, Dev's cool, is a sort of musical maverick in most ways, sings 'just ok' imo though, we move on.

Also I did try banana on pizza but I'm not convinced the flavours of banana and tomato really mesh.

you think he is only an "ok" singer? on this or everything he has done?

Hear Me and Why are definetly the highlights of the album for me. I don't care much about Sprite and Singularity gets a little too messy in the middle, but the rest of the songs are great.
The production on this is also fantastic for modern metal standards. Always thought that Transcendence had way too overpowering drums, this one fixes that for the most part.

Just let Doof be, he has pretty much explained his opinion 20 times in this thread and probally won't stop.

Singularity is... difficult. I don't think I can have a considered opinion on it yet. I like it. It's just so complex that I can't for certain say why.
"Just seemed like the 'flat Earth' analogy - and to be taken seriously in a debate it is always best to avoid siding with the people who believe the Earth is flat (or sky might not be blue, same thing)."
No one is saying the Earth is flat or the sky isn't blue, nor does the idea state that you should take those opinions seriously. The point is and always was that "objectivity exists in music because objectivity and subjectivity aren't separate" not "objectivity isn't real."
You're just full of bad posts today, huh?

My biggest problem with Transcendence was how same-y all the songs sounded. It was all mid-tempo stuff with the same vibe, and as such I couldn't really get into it. This solves that and then some. Production on this is also fantastic [2]

everything I've heard - so 'Biomech' [4/5], 'Infinity' [3/5], 'Terria' [3/5], City [3.5/5], Alien [3.5/5], this [0.5/5]
Plus I've listened to individual tracks from a few others, usually later stuff I think is not good, like this
Like I said - technically ok, but if I listened to vocals for technical reasons ahead of other factors I'd prob listen to choirs and opera (I don't)
I don't think he is a great lead singer, I don't find his vocals transmit a lot of interesting personality or have a tone that I like in and of itself

'doof seems to hold a LOT of controversial opinions'
I probably just have MORE opinions is all because I've listened to everything there is (or I'm about to listen to it 'tomorrow')
Stating you find someone only has an ok voice according to your personal taste doesn't seem like one of my most controversial but I guess this is a Devin Townsend thread.
I'm still a little taken aback people think Dev is a great singer on a par or ahead of his other facets as a musician/composer - to me that seems a way more surprising (controversial?) opinion

again im not a DT fanboy. I find a lot of his Project stuff rather dull. But his vocals on Alien and City are absolutely outrageous, and go far above what most other singers dare do
