Okay:
I think the song is about a woman who has lived her life buying many material goods but having no spiritual foundations. She always thought that having material goods would get her through life but when she dies and begins to ascend the 'stairway' she realises he isn't going to make it in because she never had any spirituality or faith in her life. I think the line "There walks a lady we all know" means we all know someone like this, who is obsessed with material goods but nothing else to believe in, religious or otherwise.
But then again, it could be something completely different.

There's many other interpretations I've heard that make sense and since the band have never said what the song is about, it just adds to the fun of trying to guess the meaning.
