in fact i dig a lot of the sounds they put out on this record, it's the lame descents into metalcore/djent and the awful drums that ruin everything for me. disappointing

if i could look past those two things i'd be right there with you with that rating, because i love some of the electronic/dub and sax/jazz stuff they do here, plus there are some badass riffs and solos. but one thing I can't handle in my death metal is triggered/overproduced drums

Hmm. I gotta say, I love Fantano long time, but I feel like him constantly bitching about production has had a negative effect on metal in the last 7 years. Maybe its just me, but we love some trashy sounding records man. We love them hard and never really cared what they sounded like. At least for me, if the production is what I love the most about an album, it is probably not particularly memorable music. There are very few instances when production had a discernable negative effect for me, and almost none where I decided I didn't want to listen to something as a result of a particularly bad case of it.
I just don't get that mentality, man. I will never judge music on the quality of its recording. Call me an old pleb if you like, but in the grand scheme of things, I feel like its pretty fucking low on the level of importance scale. I'd 100/100 times rather have great music than great production.
That said, as a big ol' Fallujah fan, I've got this sitting around a 4.0 because I feel, as I've already said, its a TFP ripoff. I wanna let it stew a bit. Same for Slugdge, which is equally enjoyable to me.

Have you heard the drums on this album? The production actively ruins the experience.

the production on this sucks because its clean af and detracts from the music majorly, overproduced you could say. you're refering to bad recording techniques as a guiding principle for those who dislike this. its like, no. thats not the issue.

As a control @Astral / Animals - how do you feel about The Flesh Prevails then? I feel like it was a far greater assault on my earholes, but didn't begin to detract from my experience save being unable to blast it at the ideal volume with no repurcussions. I don't particularly love how the drums sound on this, but as Fenriz says, drums have kind of just sounded ass since the 70's anyway, right?
|
| |
I don't think Fenriz is really happy with the way modern drums sound when he says that. He's very much in favour of drums that don't sound like this. I don't think it's an unfair assessment to criticise poor production, because production like this isn't even clean. People criticise modern production for sounding too clean. This is the opposite of clean though. The drums are literally clipped so badly due to high volume on some songs that you can't even tell different strokes apart. It very much DOES detract from the experience. And Fallujah suffer the same problem.

@Astral I can get behind that, but for me it has almost nothing to do with the music and I can't see myself ever knocking the music for the mix.

Fenriz hates those clicky bass drums and sorta so do i. I don't get the point of using BASS drums if there's no bass to them. And then these tech death bands use clicky drums and turbo kicking, effectively jabbing your ears with a sound lacking any power.
