How do you manage 2,471 comments on this site and not hear of Brand New?

they're not discussed nearly as much as they were in '08 or '10, and a lot of the discussion is now just overexaggerated accusations and unwarranted, ardent defending of lacey, so I can't blame anyone for avoiding it
Even I barely comment in those threads anymore because it's just not worth it

Well, Jesse did run a daycare in the 80s where he sacrificed children in occult sex ceremonies

Yeah I’m loving this. Like a lot.
The Canyon, Mitama, Dialogues and Colored Out are standing out as favorites but this is consistently amazing throughout.

I've heard some stuff from Brand New but I couldn't really care for it

I mean they’re not exact clones of each other but they’re def similar just based off of what I heard on this album. I love Brand New though so it’s not a bad thing in any way.

They began as close to clones as imaginable tbh, but they've really grown over the course of a few albums. I still say these guys have more instrumental talent than BN.

i think i said this a few pages back but there really are times where the singer sounds exactly like jesse lacey

His voice definitely sounds closer to Lacey's than anyone else I've heard. With that said I think Jesse has a better lower register (i.e. Lit Me Up) whereas Maggio tends to default to a higher pitch and doesn't sound nearly as brooding or tortured.
The guitarist and drummer for this band both exceed their BN counterparts, however - at least from a technical ability standpoint.

yeah I'm trying to think of BN songs with great drumming and all I've got is Archers

Anyone can disagree (and feel free to debate here), but Brand New is not an extremely skilled band instrumentally. They are very passionate and know how to convey emotion - their riffs hit at the perfect time, the drums pace things perfectly to set a mood - but they rarely blow you away with raw ability. Jesse's vocals/lyrics are the heart and soul of that band.
For TROW, they're more balanced. In listening to them you sacrifice some of the lyrical gems and brooding, tortured vocals - but you also gain better drumming, guitar work, etc.
Brand New is the better band overall, at least for me because I'm huge on lyrics, and plus they tend to craft more memorable songs/melodies. But TROW is hardly a clone/imitation, as they have unique strengths that trump even certain aspects of Brand New.

I agree - this band's instrumentals are more intimate and complex but Jesse Lacey is a significantly better songwriter and a far better vocalist. Stellar songwriting will bridge about any gap. There are several great songs that are simple. Even more bad songs which are complex.
With that said, nothing in this band is as entertaining as Vincent Accardi on stage either, even if he is off tune.

I'm not meaning to imply that complex songwriting trumps simple songwriting at any cost, just that from a raw/technical standpoint The Republic of Wolves have greater ability --- they do not always use said ability quite as well as Brand New, otherwise they'd be more popular than they are.

Yeah, I was just riffing off what you said. I didn't take you to say that at all. I'm finding your comments spot on, more than anything.
