It's really long and somehow a lot of it feels obvious - it took me a few listens to enjoy the full thing.

Only major comparison between the two records is that they came out of fucking no where and had such a dramatic impact on the site with a lot of 5's being thrown out. Plus Hans played a big part in the rise of that albums popularity there as much as he did here.

I mean, they make, as Mark Kozelek would say, "beer commercial rock", so it wouldn't be that surprising.

Had to take a break from this for awhile as I pretty much played it to death but I'm returning to it now and it still hits so damn hard.

Incredible review - I wish I loved the album nearly as much, but I suppose it's just not my cup of tea. Which is weird, since Peter Katis mixed a majority of the songs and my favorite band ever is the National, but this album just doesn't have the grounded aspect that the National (and more fitting comparisons like Frightened Rabbit and even the War on Drugs - hell, even Springsteen) have.

Faves are "What Can I Do" and "Achilles Come Down" - love that cello, though I find it weird how some songs use real strings and others used clearly processed ones, even if that's likely due to the different producers per song.

The lyrics are great but the song itself kinda sounds like a TLC commercial

Im thinking Deepest Sighs might be my fav here, or Altas Drowned... or Fear and Trembling... or Let Me Down Easy... or Heart is Muscle... fuck I cant decide

Best song for me is Deepest SIghs, followed by Keep Me in the Open and Fear and Trembling.

Every year I make a playlist of about 15 songs for my favorite tracks from that year, but I always play by the "1 song per artist" rule so it doesn't just end up being all songs from whatever my AOTY is that time.

But I'm having a hell of a time trying to pick between Fear and Trembling, Do Not Let Your Spirit Wane, and Say Yes to Life as to which one should be included from this record to represent the very best GoY song of 2017.
