So my comment above implied intent to profit which I have no way of knowing - I won't lie, my disdain for Camp Cope's music probably renders me anything but impartial. I obviously also can't tell whether they actually profited, given that I don't quite get the attention-profit relationship. But yeah, I'll cop it - that part of my comment was unwarranted, sorry y'all. What I had in mind was this part of Wil's statement:

"If you look at the timeline of how the ‘call-out’ screenshots leaked out, they seem to have been rolled out like any other PR campaign. They were literally hyped. There was palpable glee in the delivery of these accusations."

Which, reflecting on how it actually happened, it was exactly that. Emails given to someone else to spark discussion (who was dancing around and visibly excited about it all), followed by a well-timed social media post about it afterwards. Wil is flawed as hell - not gonna deny that. But there is something solidly NQR and toxic about Georgia's actions around this situation that should probably get more attention.

(I should clarify my disdain for Camp Cope is purely musical - I agree with their political message at its core, particularly regarding women in the music industry)

the call-out was calculated to fit their outspoken feminist brand. no one will press her for accountability in her actions because Men Are Trash, and she knows that

followed by a well-timed social media post about it afterwards.

i thought the "timing" of the post where she talked about the emails suggested that it was a response to the smithies' initial deflecting statement, especially given that it was accompanied by a direct reference to that statement. so no, i dont think it was intentionally "timed" beforehand as part of some calculated plot.

I might have missed an initial statement - though if you're referring to the last statement they made before their hiatus, I'm pretty sure Georgia's came first so it can't have been a response?

Either way: bad situation. Disproportionate backlash against the Smithies and I don't feel particularly icky continuing to support them. I like Georgia's voice and message but Camp Cope can't write a song for shit. That's all I've got on that one.

yea me neither. i know a lotta ppl sold off all their smithies records but still keepin mine even tho i'm not quite ready to listen to them yet. i have a feeling the next record will bring me back into the fold
I like Georgia's voice and message but Camp Cope can't write a song for shit.

haha i gotta say this perspective is refreshing cuz usually its the other way round

i didn't sell off my smithies records but i did take them out of my visible collection. my copy of throw me in the river is kind of a prized possession because my parents got it for me for christmas but they accidentally ordered a copy from australia so i have a poison city pressing. smoke splatter. it owns.

Good!

We're currently having a heatwave over here in the UK, country is struggling to fathom the power of the sun.
