It's not exactly that hard to achieve; just pluck some acoustic guitar strings and slowly strum on an electric guitar without any distortion and you've got it. Not that that makes it bad but it's not terribly impressive; if I end up loving this, I can already tell you that it will be 90% for lyrics.

Yeah I get that, I'm just saying I've heard plenty of other stuff with a similar appeal from that perspective (your Angel Olsen, Big Thief, Sharon Van Etten, Mothers, Gavin Clark, Patty Griffin, even Mount Eerie, etc.) and that this is a genre where the songwriting has to do a heck of a lot of work.

i mean musically this is a 4 but the lyrics really are the shining light, so hopefully you'll appreciate them

I think this is being underlooked in terms of everything which isn't lyrics. The production on this is dead on.

Musically it's like a 3-3.5 at best.

That's interesting neeka with stuff like this it's really weird to ignore lyrics as they're really the heart of the songwriting.

I felt entranced enough to pay attention to the lyrics without trying that much and that very rarely happens.

If this is a 5 then is every Elliott Smith record a 6? He serves as a clear blueprint for her whole aesthetic, yet his songwriting and lyricism are leagues above hers.

elliott smith is a bit more interesting musically but for some reason this just hits so much harder idk why. maybe it's because I can relate to the religious themes way more than some of Smith's ideas...idk. love both artists tho

After a few listens I'd say I really like about half of this and the other half is leaving me a bit flat. The lyrics are definitely good but I still think they need a bit more going on in the music to have the proper "oomph". I don't love her voice either and the melodies seem pretty pedestrian. I definitely see why some people have fallen really hard for this though and I totally respect that and am happy you love it so much!

I am curious to see what her new album will be like; from what I understand this album was thrown together pretty quickly with very few takes/overdubs but I imagine the new album will have a bit more embellishment as presumably it was more professionally recorded. My bet is that some of the people who love this most won't like it quite as much for that reason.

neeka it's definitely not above a 3.5 for me, it's somewhere between a strong 3 and a light 3.5 though.

Tbh I can't tell whether the hype has worked in favor of or against this for me; if it hadn't had so much hype I might have immediately dismissed it, or I might have been more impressed by it due to lower expectations.

I have a feeling that I'll prefer new album as I prefer spacier and more complex music

That's an interesting conundrum Boney, I think you should just bite the bullet and 3.5 it ;)

This had a 3.7 avg year of release so that's an indication that it's grown on most listeners. There's nothing "classic" or "amazing" on first listen honestly, so I feel bad for listeners getting into this in the context of a hypefest.

Giving it an optimistic 3.5. Sprained Ankle, Brittle Boned, and especially Go Home are all really beautiful and show a lot of potential for her to make a truly great record at some point.
