it's strange people call this death metal, vocally it is, but instrumentally it isn't very similar to a lot of other death metal bands, at the time or since, it still sounds black metal-ish to me, musically. Or rather it just sounds like heavy metal to me, not really death metal, besides the vocal.

Darkthrone were almost inventors of norwegian black metal in their own right I mean a blaze in the northern sky album really set everything off in a way for second wave black metal. there are other records one could claim but when you talk about the icy cold sound we have all come to know, Darkthrone really nailed that first in my opinion in 1992.
