"sloop john b is a 2 i'm sorry"
It probably is
But I can't bring myself to give anything on this less than a perfect.
Wouldn't replace anything on here, feels wrong.

I'm Waiting for the Day is so good it's almost stupid.

Sloop John B is like a relic from their surf period
Wish it wasn't on here

None of their surf songs were as intricately detailed as SJB though
You could chalk up its inclusion as a way to ward off Capitol's demands for a hit, but it fits perfectly with the 'disillusionment/alienation/isolation' concept Pet Sounds has as a whole.
Could you even *imagine* if they let Hang On To Your Ego slide? But at the same time, Good Vibrations narrowly missed the cut as well, so their judgement was certainly hit or miss, due to perfectionism and/or questionable tastes.

yeah imagine not liking that little breakdown when Sloop goes into a cappella then explodes back into the chorus, literally one of Brian's finest moments lmao

Mind you, SJB is a bit on the saccharine side but I've warmed up to it a lot more recently
That shit was made to sing along to

SJB and Al's version of Cottonfields absolutely slap in the car and no one can tell me different

They're both okay

Cottonfields? Absolutely not, that stuff is total fluff

Songs I actually dislike from their classic 66-71 period:
"Student Demonstration Time" - fucking garbage
"I Was Made to Love Her" - lame interpretation of a good Stevie song
"Add Some Music to Your Day" - the shame of Sunflower
"All I Want to Do" - not to be confused with "All I Wanna Do" which rules
Everything else is at least a 3/5

When Be With Me and Time to Get Alone are on the same disc? Let alone Cabinessence? Surely, you jest.
Also Add Some Music to Your Day is a goofy, light song but I guess it's nothing compared to Dennis Wilson's horndog anthem Got to Know the Woman where he beckons you to 'do the chicken.'

CCR's rendition of Cotton Fields is so much better that idk why The Beach Boys one even exists
|
| |
Album Rating: 5.0
It exists because they thought they could do another Sloop John B but forgot you need an actual interesting arrangement to support the hokey lyrics (also because they thought it would be a hit...you can guess how that worked out)

Time to Get Alone is amazing though, I love that one

20/20 is a dreadful muddy mess except for the two songs they just copied and pasted over from the SMiLE sessions and maybe I Can Hear Music if I'm feeling generous. not a good album

Album Rating: 4.5
I don't know if I agree with that honestly
It's a solid 3.5/5 with some lame songs, but enough good ones where I can hear it without being too unhappy
Cabinessence is the best obviously, but Time to Get Alone is great an Be with Me, Do It Again, I Went to Sleep and even Never Learn Not to Love are cool
