"im not done reading this but i agree it seems the cultural reaction to kanye's work including this pitchfork review seems to be increasingly concerned with his persona than the work, which is silly"
why is that silly? they're examining the madness behind the art. the lore behind the album is just as interesting if not more so than the record itself tbh. and with generic tbt reviews peddled the world over, why not have a thinkpiece on the societal impact kanye's had on the genre and culture as a whole?

"the lore behind the album is just as interesting if not more so than the record itself tbh"
in your opinion, 100% certainly not mine
not only do i think it is not very important, i dont find kanye to be a very interesting person anyway
like, do you find the kardashians interesting? do you watch their mindless shithole of a tv show? i can't verbally describe how disinterested i am in that whole thing. (im not saying kanye is an uninteresting kardashian now but you get the point)
if we are talking about how the real pablo picasso lived that would actually be a bit more fascinating, but still i would rather read about it elsewhere than in what is supposed to be a written critique of one of his works

"youre arguing past each other"
Perhaps
"If you disagree with how seriously they examine the album (i.e. you think it's pretentious) that's another matter really."
Yeah, I guess that's how I feel about it.
Btw, I often enjoy Pitchfork reviews, and their opinions on certain albums are rarely far off from mine.

Gyro, did you just 5 this?

I guess I enjoy the more detached, cynical approach to reviews more.

they're drawing parallels between them through artistic expression, not lifestyles. if they delved into his actual life it wouldn't be fascinating it would be irrelevant.
i personally thought it was a good review. like i said, there are plenty of generic kanye west tbt reviews, or reviews that just focus on the music. i think an examination of not just him but his craft and how it's affected music in the last decade is far more interesting/insightful. but to each their own

That hook on Father Pt. 1 is actually great. Why does Cudi not make music like this on his solo projects? Oh well...

Kanye should have just put a bunch of B-sides together, call it TLOP, and sell it to Martin Shkreli and get that 10 Mil, then wait a month and release this album and call it "The Real Life of Pablo". Then he would only be 43 mil in debt.
|

A win-win situation
but I don't know if Kanye's capable of thinking at the moment, have you seen his twitter?

and then get the shit sued out of him. then he'd only be in several times more debt
