Never played 1, but I had a blast with Rome and Medieval 2 Total War for a while.

Watershed was too proggy, but it had some jams. After that tho agreed.

How would you rank the first 8 Opeth records then Aiwaz? Same question to anyone who knows them all I guess. BigPleb? He will definitely have an opinion... just curious as I'm getting into them.

I was expecting the last two to say 4, then you threw a curveball with a 5+++

In your honour I'll order 'The Candlelight Years' today then, as it has ALL their best stuff according to you... excited!

So far I've only heard this, Still Life & Damnation. 'Still Life' is super-jaw-dropping-amazing & made me want to explore their whole discography (at least up to this one, for the time being).

Personally I'd rank their first 8 like this:

Still Life (5/5) > Blackwater Park (4.8/5) > My Arms Your Hearse (4.5/5) > Ghost Reveries (4.3/5) > Morningrise (4.1/5) > Watershed (4/5) > Deliverance (3.8/5) > Damnation (3.8/5 can easily be much higher for most people tho) > Orchid (3.7/5)

Your ranking (Piglet), seems close to the consensus, although like you say Damnation is a little low.

P.S. I've already ordered Blackwater Park, cheap on Amazon for a new copy at the minute.

Damnation is actually really fuckin good and I used to love it, but now for whatever reason it sends me to sleep and I've grown less and less fond of Akerfeldt's cleans over the years (thats not to say they are bad)

On 'Still Life' & this one I love the contrast between the harsh & clean vocals (which are both fantastic by the way), on Damnation obviously there's no contrast as it's all clean. The way these guys change the tone/atmosphere of a record, or even a single track/passage has really impressed me so far. None of it sounds forced & it all works which is some achievement given the almost constant stylistic changes.

However, I did enjoy Damanation (although only heard that one a couple of times).

Don't worry man, i get ya. Morningrise, My Arms Your Hearse and Orchid all have a special place in my heart not just for their budding songwriting, but their atmosphere and production. They speak on a different level than their more polished counterparts i.e. Ghost Reveries, Watershed, Blackwater Park.

The rawness is simultaneously energizing and as I now realize, nostalgic in some way...

I actually remember it very vividly ahah. My brother (user taylormemer) used to play Blackwater Park and Damnation around me a lot as a 11 year old or thereabouts so I eventually went on my own quest of discovery with the band starting from Orchid.

I then listened to Morningrise some rainy, cold ass winter day after school and Black Rose Immortal started playing just as I could see lightning flash outside my bedroom window and yeah my mum hated it, thought I was becoming a satanist. Some days after I listened to My Arms, Your Hearse and that hit even harder

Piglet, you were exposed to Opeth at 11? Lucky guy. I really had to dig deep on my musical journey & consult the internet which explains why I'm getting into them at 30, haha. Although it's weird actually because my mum was my main influence for initially 'liking music' & these days she digs some Opeth, which had absolutely nothing to do with me.
