I would just want to hear enough of their 90s material.

Even if Mangini would 'show off his chops' it would sound bland as fuck. 64th note quintuplets on the kicks are useless without good ideas. Simply hasn't got the right groove and flair for DT. And yes, Petrucci has taken their sound to new lows. A pathetic fluffy fantasy dreamland that is.

True that, even if they still write some great stuff here and there. Seeing this band 20 or even 15 years ago would've been incredible.

they're just as good now

I'm sure they're still great live, but for the sake of the set list I mean. Portnoy is also a beast in concert I reckon, and it'd be cool to see Moore.

I went with some friends and saw them in like 2009
Seeing them play Hollow Years and The Mirror and Lie live back to back before Portnoy left was kind of neat

having portnoy is obviously a plus.....you need to catch them when they're not touring an album.....will get more of a classic setlist
i also had the benefit of living near them where they would play more one off shows locally.....good ole days

This is by far my favorite album from Dream Theater. Space-Dye Vest is a goddamned masterpiece of a song.

This is a close second after I&W for me. Space is great, as is pretty much every song.
I can't even imagine them being able to write a song as stellar as Lifting Shadows now.

They really, don't seem capable of repeating anything close to Systematic Chaos, let alone Awake.

Saw them live for the first time when they were touring their self-titled + Awake anniversary and they played a lot of songs from this album.

that tour must have been really nice. Too bad they decided to play the complete The Astonishing live this year.

That would definitely suck major ass tbh.

Hah, almost went to the Astonishing, even bought a ticket but was feeling crappy and thought "Do I really want to sit through two hours of that, while feeling like this?"
Nope.
I don't see them making music like this ever again, sadly.

When you just released a brilliant album 2 years ago but you are running out of ideas and you have to make a new album for the label.
This album.
