Potsy dude you have more than 50 5s and this isn't one of them. Therefore it can't be in your top 50

This and Geo are both classic, not sure if either would make my top 10 tho

i dont mean to be rude but this is dumb logic

like arbitrary rating systems indicate any kind of dogmatic hierarchy for all to subscribe to
|

thats one of ~many~ 4.5's that would make my top 50 over the large majority of my 5's

@Pots I mean I guess you can rate stuff however you want but for me my ratings also work as a ranking - all of my 5s are better than any of my 4.5s and so on

fuck nah dude. 5 aka 'classic' for me denotes something completely different than 'superb'. there are albums that i consider quintessential must hear albums that i rarely ever listen to or even personally connect with too much. on the flip side there are 'superb' records that i don't think really quite have what it takes to be a quintessential work or a 'must listen' but are in a much more subjective sense, much more important to me personally from an emotional perspective. albums i am attached to more than the vast majority of my 5's. Lucky Shiner by Gold Panda for instance, and also Cerulean by Baths. two albums i have 4.5'd that mean more to me personally than like 95% of my 5's but i by no means consider them 'classic' works.

Fair enough man, makes sense

also for instance, Songs for Destingue Lovers by Billie Holiday is an objective classic but quite frankly i don't give a fuck about listening to it ever.

never looked at my ratings like that pots, pre cool

another factor is that i dont ever 5 multiple albums by the same artist, even if i consider multiples to be classic, solely because one is always ever so slightly 5'ier than the other and so i give it to that one just so it can kind of have that pedestal without having to share its glory. this and geo is a good example of that. geo is like a hair 5'ier.

I try to base my ratings on a mixture of how a) flawless, remarkable and innovative a piece of art is, and b) how much I personally connect to it
Some of my high ratings are blatantly just the latter, e.g. I have Feel It Break by Austra 5'd and that's musically a pretty unremarkable album, but each song hits me like a truck made out of feelings so I gave it a 5/5 rating

I try not to give more than one 5 to a given artist but sometimes the artist in question just has way too much good stuff and a second one gets pushed to the top. BoC are obviously one of those. I have this and Geo 5d and then three of their other releases 4.5d
