There are stylistic evolutions but they're so scattered and lack unification. Music entered a free-for-all age when the internet really started to take over the world.

like even if you know nothing about bm, it's clear there's so much more to this than what other heavy metal bands had done/were doing at the time.
Mercyful Fate were utterly unique and pioneered key aspects of the genre, aspects they helped CREATE.
