"these guys aren't doing anything new within the genre of black metal, as post/black and blackgaze existed far before these guys. and there are much more unique styles of black metal, so this isn't broadening jack. it's mostly fans of this band comparing it to other black metal (that they most likely haven't even listened to). we get it, yall don't listen to much bm, but don't make it out like the people who do don't like this because it's some sort of unique album that deviates so much from "traditional" bm."

@keyblade I never said they were doing something new. I said they were adding a little bit of diversity. And yes, I don't listen to much black metal, but I might start now because I had an in with these guys. I've personally never heard anything like Sunbather, so in that context, they are broadening the genre by making it more accessible to people that don't normally listen to such types of music. Whether it be the certain moods they convey within the music, and/or the direction they take with the cover art, they compelled me to listen. I also never said they've created a "unique album that deviates so much from 'traditional' black metal". So next time you want to argue my post, maybe try to actually read what I'm saying. Also, so sorry for never hearing of "blackgaze." I have a feeling I'm not alone on that one though. Maybe you could enlighten us with some blackgaze bands to look out for.

@Hopelust I wasn't referring to you specifically, but to a lot of people here in general trying to make it out that some people don't like this (virtually everyone does tho, look at how many ratings are below 3 out of 200 ratings) because this isn't true bm or whatever, which is complete bullshit.

I see your point now about how this album broadens the genre for you, but it initially came off as you were implying that black metal isn't very diverse or broad and that this album is expanding its horizons. And yes, there are many similar bands that fall under the same umbrella (yes, blackgaze is actually a thing). while not really that similar, Alcest is probably the forerunners of the scene and I can see you enjoying them. For a more similar band, try out An Autumn for Crippled Children's mostrrecent album.

I'm not gonna argue what is or isn't black metal. I'll let the black metal connoisseurs handle that.

From photographs, it seems that the lead singer would put on quite a captivating performance live. Significant stage presence or something.

I would be careful saying that in here, Deafheaven have now gained the worst fanboys on earth.

Watch your back hahaha.

Screw off Geraldo, we're talking about Deafheaven not Black Veil Brides. Stop smoking crack, you've

got a family to take care of, dammit!

I don't know where people are getting this "true bm" hate thing from, it's just not a stellar, groundbreaking record like everyone is making it out to be, end of story. A majority of us are bored to tears with the repetition of ideas and quite frankly, they plagiarize too many blackgaze ideas to constitute a rating above a 3.

Hahahaha my point is proven. And to be quite honest, the worst fanboy award goes to Deftones, Opeth, and any deathcore fanboys.

underground band

It doesn't matter if they're underground. If a majority of your fanbase thinks they've discovered God listening to your music, it doesn't matter if you have 5 or 5000 fans.

Where is this majority you speak of Wizard? 'Cause I don't see it. You wish that most listeners agreed with you, let's be honest.

When I say majority, I mean the ones that are judging this on this on the repetition factor and not how true this is to the scene (which there are probably a few morons out there). And no, I don't care if people agree with me. Obviously since you have this at a 5 and are probably heading up the fanboy parade, people are going to agree with you more...let's be honest.
