Nothing isn't that different from Catch-33 in terms of the guitar playing, the production could be criticised but the music idk.

Nothing is too monochromatic, for lack of a better description. It's too "the same" on every song.
The production is not that great, nor is the low end (no bass).
The new Meshuggah is really a new benchmark for them. They are bringing up those little things that were onvce buried deeply, like atmospheric melodies and such.

the songwriting on Catch 33 is just so twisting and cyclic, while Nothing... it just seemed off to me. I'd say the slowness was a turnoff, but it's somehow more than that. hell, it might be just that the production doesn't agree with me to the extent that it ruins the music for me.
however, I can certainly see Nothing's appeal for so many people, even if it doesn't do it for me. and Spasm is still badass.

besides, I haven't given it a full listen in a while, so it may just not have clicked yet.

"the songwriting on Catch 33 is just so twisting and cyclic"
maybe because it was supposed to evolve as it went along

see some of the slowness on Nothing is what makes me love it so damn much.

All of the songs on Nothing followed the same general path of being slow and groovy. I really like the heavier production on the Re-Nothing, so that's never been a problem for me. I just really hate how flat this sounds compared to that, ObZen and Catch-33.
"The Demon's Name Is Surveillance," for example, could've sounded better if it had a lower, more booming sound to it.
I'll probably end up at least 3.5'ing this after I give it a more focused listen-through, I just thought I'd offer a few whiny comments since everyone else seems to be fapping over it :-3

I think I like this as much as Nothing

The re-issue of Nothing sounded way too overproduced. Listen to that tasty snare on Koloss, much better.
Spasm still fucking rapes.
