Well in the first two they're used to reference an institution. The priest typically references the struggles of Jesus (and other prophets), hence the "fell to my knees". It gets pretty explicit with all the frustrations (like with Jesus' plea, blablabla why did you send me here blablabla it's going to shit yadayada). You can't really look for huge referential significance. Ts'all allegories.
To really get it all, you'd have to know what Arif was thinking when he wrote it. And that's easier said than done.
And Thor your random "Kezia =/= Jesus" was, well, random. No one said anything of the sort, or against the sort. This Message Edited On 11.18.07

Well mudvaynian said something about God and Jesus references, and I was just stating what I thought.

Shouldnt they convey the beliefs of the band members? Its not like any of this is historically accurate or anything, concept albums come up for a reason I suppose

Anyway, do the lyrics convey any beliefs of the individuals in the band, or what?
To a point, yeah. First chunk is on institutionalized religion and the implied corruption of it, second chunk is all about wars and duty and the third chunk is about rights and broads. The last track then goes, "sup nevermind we're just being vague".

How is this not a concept album? There's definitely a story and everything behind it.

Well the fact there's a story behind it doesn't really imply that there's a story being told (there isn't). It's just not a concept album in that sense. It uses a situation in an untold story as the allegory, but that to me doesn't make it a concept album

Rody throws the word concept around a lot, I just dont think they want to be pigeonholed with saps that write shitty "IT WAS ALL A DREAM!!?!" albums, yknow? Concept album is a pretty meaningless criteria, you can't really separate it to any specific characteristic because every album has a concept behind it, well, mostly.
Fortress should be even harder to interpret, because it's definitely Arif's baby lyrically. I mean yeah, it'll be heavily based on one specific idea or theme but it's going to be all over the map. Can't wait.

Although a story isnt being narrated to the listener, the story is evident. Id say its as much of a concept album as the next

What's the story then? Beginning, middle, conflict, end.
Go.

I just think calling it a concept is ridiculously vague and unflattering.

Alright, its complicated as hell. But its called Kezia, its roughly about her, a heretic, and its being told through 3 different points of view up to her death. There's a deeper meaning behind this album than just technical prowess and catchy riffs if you know what I mean

Kezia is a heretic? Is that implied? Is that stated anywhere?
There's deeper meaning to the album but that doesn't make it a concept album, that means it's actually intellectualised (unlike their contemporaries -- THA I'm looking at you faggots).

I dont see what so unbelievable about Kezia being a heretic. It seems to make sense that its what shes being tried for. Historically it wasnt uncommon for people to be jailed for heresy. Its considered a corrupt practice now, obviously, and corruption and such could be implied by the first act. The second act is her imprisonment from the eyes of the jailguard. The third act is teh pwn for Kezia.
thats sort of what Ive gathered. Youre the expert Cocaine, feel free to criticize all that

I think that's pretty true, Bfhurricane. Their lyrics seem to be open to interpretation, so people could see things in different ways. I do agree with you though.

Where does it say what she's being tried for? The priest implies heresy but it's never made clear as to whether that's concerning himself, his institution, or Kezia.
You could also argue just as easily that the second act is a look at the prison guard's duties in context of having to be part of a firing squad set to hit a young girl.
See, it's totally open. You know what's happening, but you dont know how it got to that point and what'll happen next. This Message Edited On 11.18.07

Why else would Kezia be in jail? Theres obviously a religious power at work here if the priest was so important to mention, it had to have a connection with the reason Kezia was in jail. I think its pretty obvious shes a heretic, and one of the concepts is the priest believing "'This should never be' that a woman be tried for her beliefs," realizing the corruption of his religious institution, or something to that extent. Such lyrics in the third act as "I better think of my answers now because I know questions will be asked" and "What will you-What will you say, Kezia?" (I forget the songs) are obviously part of the trial.
Or maybe she was put in jail because she robbed a bank...
And I agree, this is fun to pick atThis Message Edited On 11.18.07This Message Edited On 11.18.07

But that's only if you assume that he's mentioned purely as a companion to the implied story.
I take Kezia as a non-literal character. Her situation makes each personality question his or her situation.
This silly discussion is another reason religion sucks.
How is this silly? And how does this imply that "religion sucks?". Religion is one of the most interesting topics I can think of, personally. This Message Edited On 11.18.07

I've never been fond of the third part of the album.
If Turn Soonest was a little less forced, little less haphazard, I'd say the third is perfect.
