The fact that this is all samples is astounding. It sounds like genuinely original beautiful music.

Surely the fact it's all samples makes it less astounding? It's well put together but the fact the guy didn't write any of it takes that away from the 'skill aspect' in producing this.

Well of course it does, it's one aspect that's missing. There is skill involved but it's a different kind of skill I guess, which depending on your perspective is not necessarily as impressive.

i dont agree with what hes saying, but i think thats def an argument that can be made and it just furthers the whole enigma surrounding this album

Doesn't matter if it's all samples or no samples. The point is that this album is really, really good

You're conflating artistry with musicianship. It's all about the arrangements, man.

It's a legitimate argument that can be made against this record, possibly an unjust one, perhaps not. I'm not sure myself, I was just interested to see what people thought. I did acknowledge that there is skill involved & it certainly wouldn't alter my listening experience.

You're more or less critiquing the record for being what it is, which I wouldn't really call a valid argument though it's a valid reason to not like it I guess
I don't really see how it's any less impressive, actually I think it's more impressive because it takes a lot of creativity to put so many completely different things together and make a cohesive whole, even more so when he didn't even create something as a basis and made the entire thing from scratch with bits of other things instead. As something of a musician myself I can tell you it's incredibly hard to repurpose something already made and make it feel different and give it a different context at the same time, it's hard enough to create something without sounding too much like your influences but it's even harder to turn your influences into something completely new

Look at it this way: If you didn't know any of these songs were sampled, how would there be anyway of knowing unless someone told you or you really researched for some reason? All of it really sounds like original music and it takes immense talent to make it sound like that from samples. That's where the acclaim, amazement and enjoyment comes from.

Fair enough, I don't understand the process of turning samples into music & if you guys think it's very skilfully done that's good enough for me. Like I said (& others have as well), it doesn't influence enjoyment on any level. Excuse my ignorance.

But where is the line? Surely if each song was composed of 2 samples, it'd be less impressive. At what point does it become "on par" with an originally composed piece? When does it surpass it? Again I don't agree with it but it's certainly an arguement that can be made and I find it interesting.

I was only trying to provoke discussion & then the responses made me feel unqualified to make such claims. It's an interesting argument to say 'where is the line?'
