@Winesburgohio I think (though I'm not sure) that you said that the talent and technical skill of the musicians are ultimately irrelevant to the quality of the album. If so, then I agree and never stated otherwise. I only mentioned this in my earlier comment to correct the people who say Magic Band didn't know how to play, but I did not say that it makes the album good.

That being said, I still don't think TMR could have been recorded by amateurs (if by amateurs we mean people who can hardly play their instruments), it's just too complex.

"go look up what logic is"
*sigh*

Experimental is not always good musically, but it tends to be as a source of inspiration. In this case it is both cases.

It's entertaining as fuck though, but not perfect.

Yeah, it's another case of the "shouldn't have been a double album" syndrome.

only tracks that could have been left out are:
"dali's car"
"fallin' ditch"
"ant man bee"
"wild life"
all excellent but don't really add anything new to the album. that's still only 4 out of 28, rest are masterpieces so i guess the album rocks

I love Ant Man Bee

I'd much rather ditch Bill's Corpse and Hair Bake Pie 2

^ exactly

"Ant Man Bee" is an excellent song that would have been a highlight on any of his other albums but here it sounds too conventional and doesn't have awesome hooks to back it up, doesn't really speak to me. It also contains an awful pun in the title. :D A more successful piece from the "kinda normal" songs department is "Moonlight on Vermont".

Ant Man Bee and Wild Life are tiiiiight

that said i feel like this album is best heard in his holistic entity, even though i love this i'd find it hard to 'rank individual tracks' or w/e because they bleed into each other so cohesively and they're all required for the 'vision'. in that sense it always feels weird calling this a rock album; claims that it's symphonic are closer to the mark than they might first appear

Safe as Milk is better, and Lick My Decals has better highlights.

there were some parts i liked tbh and it definitely deserves another listen but it was way too annoying and grating for me to want to give it another go rn
