Still the best name in progressive death metal and still the most underappreciated.

He obviously doesn't always mind keyboard shenanigans

I do most of the time, but not on here

Consciousness pt. 1 and 2 is the best thing this band has put out imo, so at least give those a try if you find you don't like the sound of SM Pika ;)

It's only banter Pika but you are a savage with some of your ratings lmao

Also SM has Periphery II like production so I'm just gonna put my money down and bet you won't like it

I know, man, I know. I don't really care about production, but if it's a keyboard-laden chugfest, then yeah, it is very unlikely that I will dig it

Pika's hate against Hotelier hurts. But he 5'd Amia Venera so he's got a pretty lenient pass in my book.

I really don't see SM or Aathma as keyboard-laden as its still much more guitar centric. Curious if you like it.

Yeah my prediction for Pika’s SM rating is 2.5 (based solely on the fact it's mine as well).

So, I am listening to Spiritual Migration (about halfway through at the time I'm writing this) and it's... disappointing. The best word to describe it would be unfocused, I guess? It really sounds all over the place so far. Obviously, this is just my first listen yada yada, but it's kind of frustrating how it's not as grabbing as Core was from the first several minutes and all they way till the end.

Also, funny that, the first thing that popped into my head after about 15 minutes of music was Odyssey to the West by Slice the Cake - an album that tries so hard to be "prog" that it doesn't bother putting any elements to keep the user interested and instead relies on piecing together random generic bits of prog, core and djent, all combined into this boring and extremely underwhelming product that lacks any sort of substance. This album evokes similar feelings in me - yes, I know the two bands are QUITE different in their respective sounds, but you get the point.

Try Aathma. I love Spiritual Migration, but it's precisely because it's Persefone throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks. I like it the least out of their discography for the same reason.

Aathma takes the technicality of Spiritual but makes it more atmospheric and focused.

Cool, marsbro. I just gotta give SM the proper time it deserves first. I might just choke on my own words in a couple days and be like "WHOA, HOW DID PIKAFUCK NOT DIG THIS?!"

It's by far their weakest record and I agree with a lot about what you're saying Pika. The second half just gets annoying and pretentious for the most part. But it also has some of the most insane moments I have ever heard in musical history. Such a weird album.

Give him time Tundra. We both love it, maybe Pikabro will come around. Some hooks of that record do take a little time to sink in.

Ok this is why I think the album is great, it has the intense moments and the riffs are great, also the solos are mind boggling, but also has the Meditations to get a little bit of (or a lot of) a breather from the more intense proggy bits, no? Ok well I guess I'm just a salty idiot

@Pika. On a different note: may I ask you to reconsider your rating for Portal of I? That score hurts me on a very personal level lol. Seeing Ne Obliviscaris next to Etienne Sin hurts my eyes.

If I could 0.1 Etienne, I so would. But I can't. Maybe I should just remove it altogether because no decimal in the world could quantify that travesty, haha.

Sorry about NeO. I always felt like they were a cheap Opeth rip-off with violins. Never got the love for them. But again, you can probably tell by my ratings I'm not the biggest prog fan in the world.

Nah I just think you're very selective about the prog you enjoy. Case and point: This very album right here. Advice though, if you ever get the chance to see NeO live, for the love of every music god out there please do it. They might be the tightest live band currently out there. I've seen them 4 times now and stood with my jaw drooling on the floor and my face melted off all 4 times.

Not the biggest NeO fan either, definitely don't think they're 'awful' though, simply underwhelming.

Pika pulled through on the SM disdain, as predicted.
