He is ersatz shit.

Progressive rock died because everyone got so stuck up their own asses they all forgot how to rock. That's why Rush and Pink Floyd managed to survive.

I'm in the minority of people that enjoys Genesis' post-prog era music aren't I?
|
| |
Hardly, they definitely had much more commercial success than Genesis' prog era music. xD

I'd be fine with the guy having controversial opinions (like he often does) if he actually explained his points well. Say what you will about TheNeedleDrop, but at least Anthony Fantano actually articulates his points well and lets you see where he's coming from. Meanwhile, Christgau just drops 4 or 5 words - maybe a few sentences at max - that are somehow supposed to explain his entire opinion. Needless to say, I think music criticism has evolved considerably over the years since those days

If any of us were to copy/paste a Christgau review on this site and pass it off as our own, it'd get neg'd to oblivion based on the pisspoor quality of the writing

I mean, in more underground places like Sputnik it certainly has. But for the mainstream, Billboard or Rolling Stone are good sources of musical criticism and I'd say they are as retarded as they were decades ago

The mix of Christgau's narcissism and the fact that he's so renowned for who knows which reasons is enough for him to base his statements on the fact that "he's Christgau and can say whatever he wants to and it will be a valid, professional opinion"

That's the part about him that infuriates me the most, honestly

Michael Gira - "Sonic Youth and Swans were thoroughly ignored by the New York press and the Village Voice, which is where Robert Christgau wrote. He wrote this review of Big Black and said, 'Big Black make Swans and Sonic Youth look like limp dick poseurs.' What I did in response to this idiotic slight was, I got a glassine baggie and I masturbated into it, sealed it, and sent the baggie to Christgau care of the Village Voice with a note saying, 'Mr Christgau, please drink this. Yours sincerely, Michael Gira.' Jarboe, with whom I had recently started a relationship, sent him a dozen roses ceremonially surrounding a big white dildo. Sonic Youth—being more savvy, media-wise—wrote a song called 'I Killed Christgau With My Big Fucking Dick'."

beautiful

His writing draws a reaction so it's good press even if it's a bad opinion.

This is my "favorite" Christgau review:
"They bitch because everybody compares them to Joy Division, and they're right. It's way too kind, and I say that as someone who thanks Ian Curtis for making New Order possible." - Christgau, review of Interpol's Turn On the Bright Lights
