>As much as it pains me to say, Unearth have been really mid at best after Watchers of Rule (probably their best album imo). I don't know what happened, but even if they were to let Ken and Nick back in, they'd still never be as good.
100%. I think it's a combination of burnout and bitterness. They never quite took off after the promise of TOS and III like AILD and ABR did, despite ABR being heavily influenced. Maybe just because they're too heavy for scene kids and not heavy enough for the DM bands? Not having cute dudes to sing choruses maybe? Or the more uncomfortable option that they just are doomed to be one of those "your favorite band's favorite band" types. I remember Doc Coyle (God Forbid) talking about how hard it was to see their peers become successful and having to realize that they're just better. All I know is TOS changed everything for me and Watchers was like ultimate validation for me always repping them lol, I was so proud of them for that.

Such a shame that these guys faded into obscurity when their and Adam D’s work on this basically set the template for the genre for the next decade

Yeah these guys ended up being hella underappreciated in the grand scheme of things

They're like the sevendust of metalcore or something. Better than 90% of their peers, just one or two things holding them back at unfortunate times.

Thought crossed my mind: "problem" (not a real problem, per se, just an observation) with Unearth is that they are an "in the middle" band.
Still released some slappa-tier albums like TOS and The March, but they never had the ferocity of a Raised First or the technicality of an ABR, nor the hooks of KSE, or the ball-crushing heaviness of Acacia Strain. But there are a lot of bands that got lost in the mix like rack toms who are/were great. Unearth was/is still very successful. I'm thinking peeps like Snapcase, Zao, Strife, or Grade. Compared to these guys, Unearth are megastars. It's not like Unearth ended up being "underground nobodies" who never toured or something. But without really leaning into something in particular, they kind of ended up being Metallica while all the cool kids were listening to Death.

They never sold out for poppy choruses or anything to make them more radio friendly like All That Remains.
