First, Calm Down
and secondly I have been a Green Day fan since Dookie. I cannot admit to being a hardcore fan who knew of Green Day before Dookie, but 1994 is when I became a fan.
Again I stand by the fact that lyrics DO NOT matter, they could simply being making noises with their mouths that match the notes of whats supposed to be sang. It wouldn't make a difference, after a little Google Search it is easy to see a consensus among professionals that in this area of music, lyrics do not matter. Think about it, if you were to hear a parody like Weird Al does, the lyrics may become more comical, but the music is the same.
Also, we all have no way of proving when we first heard of a band, so we all have to take each others word.
I have no doubt that "Adam Downer (Electric City)" has been listening to Green Day for a very long time. He seems very knowledgeable about the topics and has expressed his opinion so.. (I just strongly disagree with him)
My story with this album is that when I heard Green Day was coming out with a new album I downloaded it as soon as I could. After downloading it impatiently, I rushed through each song only listening to portions of it. After spending about 5 minuted with 18 tracks, I hated it. I would listen to about 5-10 seconds of the beginning then 20-30 seconds of the middle. I hated every single song. If I had visited this forum then, I would have agreed with everyone of you, it sucked. Then before taking a long day trip to Northern New Jersey, I burnt a CD with 21st Century Breakdown on it, mostly to test the new CD player in my Car. I listened to the entire album on the way up. I still didn't like it, I would have probably given it a 3/5 at the time.
I swore off the album and came to the conclusion that it was very experimental and Green Day probably shouldn't have released it. It was only until I heard another family member of mine play "¿Viva La Gloria? (Little Girl)" and I gave it another chance.
This was around this time that I heard of the Foxboro Hot Tubs and also downloaded "Stop Drop and Roll!!!". I often listened to these albums together and wondered why Green Day even bothers to release albums as Green Day anymore. It became crystal clear why Green Day chooses to create a new band every time they want to release a song (The Network and FHT). I grew very fond of 21st Century Breakdown in the following days. I learned to like every song on it and dreaded having to deal with people (like myself, several days earlier). Sure enough 21st Century Breakdown was being criticized for the same things I would have said before I gave it a fair chance.

idk dude your lyrics argument is pretty ridiculous. Half the reason behind Green Day's charm is being able to shout along with every word they sing, and (for some) being able to identify with their message/image/what have you. At the Green Day concert I went to I had a ball shouting along to every damn song. Even if it was something as simple as "I GOT NO MOTIVATION!" at least it was base enough to connect on some level. They've never been lyrical masterminds but this album really has some abortions on it that simply cannot be ignored, especially under the guise that this is "intelligent mainstream pop punk"

The lyrics are the whole draw to Weird Al, it's what makes him funny, point fails.

Again, it's not experimental.
I still didn't like it, I would have probably given it a 3/5 at the time.
60% = not liking an album? Makes you look like a fanboy.
Again I stand by the fact that lyrics DO NOT matter
You are wrong, they do. Good lyrics aren't always meaningful but if you're going to use a recognised human language as part of your music it should at least be better than Like a dog that's been sodomized. If it's not you might as well be singing in Hopelandic but I don't expect you to know what that is.
First, Calm Down
I'm perfectly calm. You're just perfectly wrong. I'm not even having to try. Like I've said, I don't objectively believe this record is as bad as I've subjectively rated it, but it's a world away from being a 4/5, let alone 5.

I'm afraid to give this a listen. It doesn't seem like it will exactly bring back memories of sitting around in my bedroom in high school trying to learn how to play 'Welcome to Paradise' on guitar.
