personally i think one more long song and one more short song would make this album better than it already is. but this album is epic..

i heard a bit of still life the other day and it sounded amazing. ill end up getting it sometime next week.

Glad I finally got this, it's perfect IMO. Blows Ghost Reveries out of the water.

Ghost Reveries is great, too. I like their 70s style prog albums a lot.

Ghost Reveries is awesome, but pales in comparison to this and Still Life.
Can't wait for Watershed, I want them to show us the album art, or give us the track lengths or something really soon.

I think Ghost Reveries is amazing, I prefer both this, Damnation and Deliverance however. Definately rank GR up with Still Life, though.
I'm also sooo excited for Watershed, man. I really hope it delivers the goods.

This and GR are the only two Opeth albums I have. Still Life is the only other one I plan on getting. Maybe Damnation.

What is it you like about Opeth, their sorta 70s prog sections or their heavy deathy parts?
If the latter, go for Deliverance next.
|
| |
Still Life is easily their best album though. My Arms, Your Hearse is really good too.

I dunno, I'd say this or Damnation is their best. Still Life and MAYH are both epic, too.
To be fair, though, I flip flop with Opeth constantly. I have not heard a single bad song by them, and that makes it ridiculously hard to pick a favourite album. Or song.

@mediocreatbest
Get Still Life then. It's their best album as well as my favorite album ever. It has some of their best acoustic sections, possibly their best honestly. All the songs have beautifully done acoustic sections.
Don't stop there, at least get My Arms, Your Hearse as well. It's their easiest album to listen to, other than maybe Damnation. Nothing goes over 10 minutes on that album, and it's probably their most energetic. Imo, their third best.
Damnation is easily their worst imo, the only thing Opeth that is overrated imo. It pales in comparison to their others.
Still Life>BwP>>MAYH>GR>Morningrise>>Orchid>Deliverance>>>Damnation
Orchid is underrated, excellent album. About on par with deliverance, but it's not as repetetive.

Wow thanks for that beast of info. I'll look into those albums.

Whilst I disagree with that ranking(for now...) I agree, check out Still Life. It has some incredible acoustic sections.

trying to rank opeth albums is pretty useless
Each of them are a sincere effort and a reflection of the attitudes of the band at a particular moment. For those just getting into Opeth, you can't go wrong no matter what you decide to pick up.

Mediocre, just get them all. They are all amazing in their own unique way.
As mentioned I'll recommend you getting Still Life next (as you're planning on), then get Deliverance + Damnation as a combo, then My Arms, Your Hearse and finally the last two; that way you should be able to enjoy the awesomeness of them all, at least I did/do ;P
|

yeah, the only way to get the true Opeth experience is by buying EVERYTHING they have, which is what I've done. Because I'm the best.
|
| |
PS get My Arms, Your Hearse first, that's the BEST
