Talk about clueless

Yeah cos calling Gavin a great drummer means I must not know anything about drummers...

Have you even heard of Billy Cobham?

Gavin has been given a ridiculous amount of praise since he's joined PT and he deserves a lot of it because of his groove and technique (I mean he's a jazz drummer so he's already ahead of the game), but I do feel he could have more interesting drum patterns and fills, and he tends to stick to one pattern for too long at times like on Sound of Muzak, now while people will argue that he's doing it for the sake of the song and not trying to show off, there is still room for different ideas to be brought in the mix.

Pretty much agree with this. He's a great drummer and deserves at least some of the acclaim he gets but some people act like he's the best drummer of all time and I'm sorry but there's a lot of drummers I'd rank above him.

Is it just me who can't take a person with a Justin Bieber avatar talking about drummers seriously?

Jamie I agree with you completely. Gavin is an amazing drummer, but I'd definitely rate Neil Peart and Danny Carey way above him. Don't know if I'd rate Steve Judd above Gavin but Judd is amazing too.

gavin is honestly more of a pop/rock drummer than prog in many ways. He focusses more on timing than complex coordination and patterns and playing fast. You know, like slightly playing in front of or behind the beat for the sake of each movement in the song. One of the most musical drummers I have heard and probably the most musical in prog rock. If he hits a drum, you know its not just cuz he feelz like wailing. Every hit he does he thinks about.

yeee.

Also his playing evokes a really relaxed feel. Even when hes doin something really fast. I understand the ppl sayin that sometimes he could mix it up more but he's really big on the "drummer supporting the rest of the band" thing.
