PALE FOLKLORE AND THE MANTLE > ASHES

*runs and hides*

The past few years i've been leaning on Pale Folklore being their best album, but with the seasons changing and all this fucked up New England sleeting we've been getting up here looks like Agalloch will be the soundtrack to these next few months.

I've always said Pale Folklore is their best, but this album is so incredibly close.

Ashes is more built on sheer grandiosity and minimalistic stylings akin post-rock/metal. The Mantle just has so much going on in the background, and while it may not be as dense on the exterior there's a lot more to be found with patience.

Or something.

Every instrument works together in a much better synergy on ashes than any of their other releases i find. The build ups are more powerful, the overall feel is more epic, the atmosphere is flawless, etc

It's cool man. It's just an opinion haha.

For me there's a certain - I almost want to say sloppiness to Pale Folklore. And The Mantle is slightly too long-winded for me.

And I agree with SCREAM's points on Ashes.

What Ashes lacks I think, that sets it apart from this or Pale Folklore, is a cohesive identity. I think Ashes is more of an album built off the individual parts (not saying it totally is, just more so) than The Mantle or Pale Folklore, which are so important to listen to as a singular piece.

I always thought ashes sounded more cohesive than Mantle and PF :/

That I have to disagree with completely. Ashes is by far their most cohesive to me and Pale Folklore is hardly cohesive at all.

@Crysis

I agree with The Mantle being about cohesion, it's their most cohesive record

and also their weakest, I might lower it to a 3.5

there is a lot of annoying filler and stupid crap in my opinion, its like a bloated Pale Folklore

But I think it's because I don't really like black metal, maybe thats why I am more a fan of the more post-rock/folk oriented Agalloch than the more black metal one. Ashes is a 5 for me, really love it.

Pretty sure Pale Folklore will always be their best.

To me, Ashes has three totally different parts. The first has Limbs and Falling snow, the second has Fire Above and Not Unlike The Waves, and the third is the Our Fortress Is Burning trio. The instrumental in the middle is just sort of there. I can see why people say PF isn't very cohesive, but I think the logical progression is most definitely there, and if you don't see the cohesiveness in this album you are just retarded.

I definitely see it here but like Angel i find this kind of bloated in parts.

I see it somewhat on PF but definitely less than on both others

And I see the separation you're talking about Crysis but to me those parts all sound like they go together perfectly almost like parts of a story

With Pale Folklore, the placement of The Misshapen Steed helps to bring together the She Painted Fire songs with the rest of the album. Hallways and Dead Winter Days fit perfectly together, and segway to the two really mellow closing tracks with As Embers and The Melancholy Spirit.

Yeah, Ashes is almost like a post-metal opera or something with movements that contain inner climaxes and swells, with Bloodbirds being the album's overall climax. Everything just flows so well. To me at least.

funny I just listened to Ashes in full again today, its probably the least structurally complex Agalloch record, but the melodies and production are so lavish is makes everything come to life.

I think the reason I like Pale Folklore so much is that I'm a complete sucker for really melancholic and melodic black metal, and generally look upon the world of post-rock buildups and shit with scorn. But that doesn't entirely explain why I love this so much. Best of both worlds, maybe?

Makes sense to me. Their new album is really fuckin awesome though now that I've given it plenty of time to sink in. Only thing that beats it for me this year might be Paracletus.
