That would be the coolest thing ever. As long as they leave the singers from the second album out of it.

I wasn’t expecting as many tunes post Nighttime Birds, especially Great Ocean Road which was so cool to hear!!

I hope this motivates them to do more than just this handful of shows.

They're coming to Lisbon in July to play this thing in full. Best news ever!

if one was trying to persuade a non-metal enjoyer that they should go to a tG show, am I correct in thinking I should start with Motion #1 over Strange Machines? It seems strange to say, given how much of a hit SM was in The Netherlands (and it's apparently their most popular track on my streaming service) but Motion seems the likelier bet to me.

I could've been a little more deceptive and just started with a few big Nighttime numbers or something else entirely, but it is a 30 year tour of this album and deceit is bad (although I will also try and sneak a couple of 'softer' songs in also. Broken Glass / You Learn About It, for definite)

^^Whatever you play from Nighttime Birds to Souvenirs will be just fine, The Gathering is the most friendly metal band to non-metal audiences.

Album Rating: 4.0

True. I agree generally. I'm just wary of the fact they plan to play this album extensively. It's for the 30 yr anniversary. Look at Chousifar's posted setlist and it may end up being something similar (i.e. they played ALL of Mandylion). I don't want to give my would-be guest the wrong impression, so thought if I at least include Motion #1 it's a little bit more 'representative'

I would probably just skip this album entirely otherwise (if I was looking to 'recruit' someone) lol.

I don't think that those shows are gonna be full blown metal, especially since all members are well into their fifties, on par with their audiences.

Mandylion-era The Gathering are not, say, '90s Deicide.

On another note, what usually irks non-metal audiences in non-extreme metal are the vocals, and The Gathering apparently are ok in that sector.

Oh, it won't be. They will play other more recent material, also. And yeah, the vox are a (deserved) selling point for anyone really.

They have better albums but Motion #1 (& 2 if we can count it as ‘one’) is definitely one of their peaks.

Saw these guys live last night and they played this album in its entirety, plus a few extra tracks off some of their other albums. Wonderful stuff.

I got to see 5 songs from mandylion plus Inuit and Saturnine, yesterday. Best concert of my life and the sound was pretty shitty (venue's fault).

I love these guys so much.

Saw the band live yesterday.

Easily among the top 5 live shows I have ever attended.

The band was heavy as hell, and Anneke is an league of her own, infinitely better than the albums.

Here's to hoping that the reunion will last more than the tour for 30-year anniversary for this album.

Album Rating: 5.0

I don't think so. I'm positively sure Anneke will end up replacing Silje anyway but Jelmer will probably leave after the tour and, hopefully, they will write a new album in the near future.

Album Rating: 4.0

^^I reall don't know if the reunion will last in time, these guys and gal are well in their fifties...

Imho, they don't need to write new albums, if they can tour for the anniversaries of the albums that lie ahead of this one, it will be more than enough.
