Yes, pretty much, Jacq. If this was one of the very few dm records in existence, I'd spin it sure. But we got Blood Incantation, Gorguts, etc. so...

Are Incantation, Immolation and Suffocation products of their time?

"I guess these guys weren't exactly pioneers out of the bunch"

Obituary were hugely influential, what the hell are you talking about.

Don't think there was anything like this when it came out. I remember an interview with Phil Anselmo who praised this for inventing a new doomy sound in death metal.

Incantation, Asphyx and Autopsy incorporated doom elements into their sounds - and with greater results too. I am not denying how influential these guys were. But if this got released today... well, not many people would dig it I'd imagine.

On the other hand, if Pierced from Within, Close to a World Below or Onward to Golgotha came out this year for example, they would most likely be heralded as top-of-the-drawer osdm revival records.

I think the comparative ease of emulating this style of DM (as opposed to that of Gorguts, Immolation, Demilich, etc.) has led to this sounding a little unremarkable in retrospect, but yeah, to say Obituary weren't pioneers is pretty silly.

Can't really compare Obituary to the NY stuff tbh

Obituary is kinda like a death metal Celtic Frost with the Celtic Frost elements being blatantly obvious. In that same way, the Asphyx comparisons definitely have merit.
Incantation, Suffocation, Immolation...all got a way different sound.

I wouldnt even call this doomy, more like groovy, mid-paced death metal. Not that comparable to Incantation, Autopsy or Asphyx.

Yeah, groovy was the word he used, not doomy. That's me.

It was from a primitive time where riffs and solos reigned supreme.

Primitive death metal can be very satisfying.

I was there in 1989 fellas. Bought the debut. The guitar tone and pace is what set this band apart. This album is their best. Each song is memorable.

I don't think music being "basic" or "simplistic" is really a valid criticism. Many bands play relatively simple music but still manage to write awesome stuff. Of course, I'm not that big on this band but it's just not because of that. I'd much rather listen to something like Bolt Thrower in terms of that mid-paced kinda groovy side of dm.

I could probably give this another chance though, I do like their debut. But I've said that a lot so who knows if I actually will lol
