Slipknot and SOAD were prob the first “heavy” bands I got into. Opeth, Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir were the main ones that pushed me into extreme metal.

I feel like most people who got into extreme metal look back to Slipknot. My 5 bands that helped me breakout were Disturbed (yeah, ironic cuz I hate them now), Slipknot, Korn, System of a Down, and surprisingly Chevelle somehow.

I never was into Disturbed at all but I know a lot of people that were. They headlines when I went to see Rob Zombie, left before they came on lol.

Them and Slipknot headling for Mayhem Festival back in 08 was legit my first ever concert. If only I could swap Disturbed out with any band I really want to see live.

It were Within Temptation, Rammstein and Linkin Park, Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir for me, when I was 14. Then I saw Morningrise and was shocked by the song lengths, and immediately fell in love with Opeth.

Yeah the song lengths really threw me off at first but of course now it all makes sense.

Hah, yeah. I always thought that Mother Earth, clocking at a whopping 5.30, was such a long song. So I vividly remember stumbling upon Opeth records and being in awe. Funny to think that those things apparently mattered back then.

I never was bothered by long songs but maybe because I was a major fan of Tool before and after all the changes to my musical taste. Tool is still my favorite band to this day but it's kind of funny how burnt out on them I am.

I can’t get into Tool at all. Never could.

We finally found something to start an argument over. haha nah but I totally get it. I have a lot of friends who love a bunch of shit we all love when it comes to metal but then can't stand Tool.

Tool are overrated for sure but I still like them

Yeah not a huge fan either, good band but they’re definitely not a regular jam

I'm an albums kind of guy, and their interludes annoy me. They always interrupt the flow, and there are so many of them. The real tracks are very good though.

Album or bust for me. Yeah I’ve got nothing against interludes but they can be overdone, any more than 2 per album & things tend to get dicey, that’s not an absolute though as with most things music related.

Intermission is their best interlude. Ties directly into the next song too

Yeah, completely agree Demon and Source. I've got nothing against them in general, but Tool overdo them like crazy. Some of them work just fine, but then you have crap like Die Eier Von Satan, (-) Ions, Mantra, Lipan Conjuring.

useful idiot doesn't really make much sense unless you're listening to aenima on vinyl

Yeah that's probably one of their dumbest interludes imo

From the top of my head: that's the one with the vinyl popping sounds isn't it? Very dumb yeah.
All those interludes disrupt the flow of the albums to the point that they feel more like collections of songs than real albums to me.
