Finished it now. Well. There is no climax or anything theyvre building up to. It's like they tried a Reflection thing here. Not sure whether that works or not

there are plenty of people his age with twice the pipes. poor technique + overuse is the culprit
his performances on all these songs have sounded like APC ballads, same thing was going on with Eat the Elephant so it's not exactly a surprise

I'd say on Descending live he belts quite a lot of strong notes, but on Invincible and Fear Inoculum he does sound more like APC's recent stuff, i.e it's more toned down. I still hope we get wild moments from him on the record. There is a supposed to be a song that goes harder than ticks & leeches so I don't know how he can sing on that without pushing himself at least a little bit.

Reflection has clear build ups and climaxes that feel earned though

Yea, Maynard never had good technique tbh, but that's part of his appeal back then.

@Jasdevi have you heard his recent live performances of part of me or sweat? He can still belt, but I feel as though he is afraid that if he does it more often he will wreck his voice completely

yeah sure he gets "up there" on Descending, but there's a distinct lack of weight to his voice and none of those passages are sustained at that intensity for all that long

@Valkoor that's my impression as well

"Yea, Maynard never had good technique tbh, but that's part of his appeal back then."
Couldn't be more wrong about this. Watch the live sober performance from 1993. His technique is flawless there and the control over his voice is insane. Back in that era nothing could stop him.

Okay, I should clarify some things. When I talk about good technique I'm talking about singing that's healthy and sustainable over a long period of time. What Maynard did back then was never even close to sustainable technique.
Bad technique doesn't mean it sounds bad. Maynard sounded great back then and he does now. Singing like that every day for and hour or more will be taxing though.

he has great breath control and support but i feel like he was just guessing with his distorted vocals cause they were all over the gaff. I've seen performances of stinkfist Where he's going so hard his voice is breaking while trying to sustain the scream

Maynard isn't in his 30s anymore.

New song rules, unsurprisingly. I was originally going to wait to hear the new single and just hear it with the album but lol who the fuck was I kidding.

I didn't like it first listen, now I can't stop ahahah
I'm glad they changed the sound up a bit away from the Lateralus/10k days sound whilst still having it sound very much like Tool.

Agreed - also I imagine this is one of those songs that will make much more sense when thrown together with the other 70 minutes of the album. But this was a great preview to get a gist of the sound.

Yup agreed, have we had a track listing yet?

no named tracklisting yet aside from "Fear Inoculum" being the first track, but sites are showing 10 tracks, with track 7 being labelled "explicit".
there's this too (supposedly) showing more track names: https://www.reddit.com/r/ToolBand/comments/cnacpn/more_track_lengths_revealed/
