Ghost Reveries was the first release that sounded like an amalgamation of other Opeth albums (done brilliantly, may I add), up until that point each one has it's own distinct flavour.

''All their shit sounds alike''
It does, but on the other hand it doesn't. How peculiar.

Peak Opeth moment right there.

If this was concept album about death choosing to rebel against war, famine, pestilence and ultimately God condemning them all to oblivion in ‘Blackwater Park’ the
“THE SUUUUNNNN SEEETTSSS FOREEEVVEEERRRRRR
OVERRRRRRR
BLACKWAAATTEERRRRRRRR
PAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRK“
would be a lovely ending.
As it is it’s still one of the best ways to end an album.

Underrated RIFFING at times too. Band was so dope in their prime.

2000s Opeth >> 90s Opeth

Ayyee that's a bold statement.
Given the fact that both MAYH and Morningrise happened in the 90s, and the 00s 'only' have GR as far as my 5.0s are concerned I'd say this is incorrect. But they've released more material in the 00s and most of it is totally incredible, so yeah. Difficult!

To my ears, MAYH doesn't sound as mature or as polished of a record as it could have been. Blackwater Park sounds perfect in every way, and Ghost Reveries isn't far off from it. I think it's really just a preference to the production, and Mikael's voice being better in the 2000s.

The production on this album is insanely good, arguably their best. But I prefer the atmosphere on MAYH

I think this is a little overproduced for my tastes, I mean it's good but it's almost too good where it saps the life out of it a little. Just a teensy tiny bit. It still is a phenomenal album, but I prefer the slightly more organic sound they went for in the 90s. GR is also a little less flat in its production.
But indeed, a matter of preference, all of their pre-Pale Communion output has been incredible and that's ten albums my god who does that!?!

yueh agred, the jagged guitar prod on still life is vastly superior for example

Oh Piglet must our paths diverge right here, just before Armageddon?
The thing is that Wilson is usually... ehh... not fantastic, but with Opeth he actually does good things.
That Deliverance mastering for example.
