People always talk about the band's conflicted relationship between Steph and Chino but they rarely talk about the fact that there is also a huge push-and-pull between planning and spontaneity when they're writing their albums. Gore is a great record except for the production which I think was a knee-jerk response to how glossy and calculated KNY was. I think they really wanted to recapture a more organic and garage feel with Gore, but they leaned too hard in that direction. The fact that they are taking their time on the new one tells me that they have probably learned from their mistake and are hopefully combining the best of both worlds this time.

"and the band sounds like they're on autopilot"
I absolutely loved Gore upon release but I completely agree with this sentiment today, though autopilot-Deftones is still pretty good. It relies too much on the sound/aesthetic they built on the previous three albums (and perfected on KNY) and other stereotypical Deftones-isms while the songwriting takes a backseat. All of the problems the album has are compounded by the production problems, which makes Steph's Axe-Fx guitars sound especially synthetic.

“It’s gonna sounds like White Pony.”

Chino didn't say that, he said in regards to WP and comparing it to the new record ''We basically made whatever we liked, whatever was happening at that moment. It didn’t really go along with what was going on around us, as far as our contemporaries and where other music was.”
To me that basically means nothing lol, it's just a long way of saying it'll be a Deftones album.

Gore is a great album, muddled by terrible production/mixing.
