Yeah, this seems more accessible than their other records to me, besides maybe the first. But it's weird to talk about Ulcerate in terms of accessibility cause that definitely isn't the point with them. The subtle but very tangible melodicism in this record really adds a great dimension to the songs though.

i wasn't really speaking of immediacy in terms of accessibility
I'm going stick with this for a bit anyway to see if I can get more out of it on repeat listens

Couldn't have said this better myself; it's that additional melodicism that makes this my favorite from them. They've added another wrinkle to their sound w/o compromise; it's more melodic, but it's still very unmistakably Ulcerate.

It's definitely more melodic, tho that has never been a huge selling point to me. I love this album, but I'd take shrines or eif over it almost any day

Shrines has Chasm of Fire. Who needs melody when you have Chasm of Fire?

I still prefer EiF, but it's my second fav Ulcerate, for sure.

This just plateaued for me. Started off about as strongly as one could expect of an Ulcerate release, then grew on me a little before I eventually began to experience diminishing returns. It is immediately gratifying and it has atmosphere in abundance, but it also lacks those incredible adrenaline pumping moments found on EiF or Shrines.

I dunno, man. It's so measured and powerful over the runtime. Like some cosmic beast that's lived for several millennia and sits comfortably in its power.

I'm gonna have to go with Demon on this one. I'm just not at the point where I really appreciate the melodic element of it yet

From my lens, I appreciate them subtly reinventing themselves, despite it being completely unnecessary. Always daring to break new ground for the sake of it, these guys. They're really alone in their own class and always moving forward.

I'm just saying they stepped a little outside of their already broad, nuanced box with this and I appreciate the thought. Every release from EiF on was coming from a similar place and record after record has still been fantastic, especially Shrines. They mixed it up more than usual here, and I applaud it. They already had a perfectly winning formula but they dared to do more in spite of that.

"Every release from EiF on was coming from a similar place"
Hmm I dunno. Destroyers was much more post-oriented than EiF and I feel like the melody on this is a more fleshed out version of Shrines' approach, rather than something new. Agreed this is very different in terms of presentation with the drier, less claustrophobic production, but style-wise, it's more of a logical conclusion to what they've been building towards imo.

I don't think we're necessarily disagreeing. Like, if you call the transition from Fracture to EiF a complete change of formula, they've had that same formula that they struck gold with for their whole career after. I think they've picked different aspects of that sound to hone in on for each record since. I agree that it's a completely logical progression, but also it stands apart in its own beautiful way, as all their records do.

"it stands apart in its own beautiful way, as all their records do"
Agreed. I probably should've also quoted "they mixed it up more than usual here" my bad.
Just wouldn't say say EiF through Shrines were similar enough that this represented a departure, especially coming after Shrines which was also surprisingly melodic. I mentioned Destroyers because I reckon it's about as distinct from EiF as this is, exploring texture and crescendos as much as this does melody.
