I like Famine, but it does have too many ideas running through it at once. [2]

The only part of this whole album I can't get into is that flute solo breakdown section. Sometimes it's amusing to listen to, but mostly it just sounds bizarre. The first half of Famine is dope tho.

I think the thing that kills me about Opeth's last decade is their lazy transitions. Their best albums demonstrate an uncanny ability to transition between very different styles and movements in a completely seamless way. Modern Opeth is littered with awkward and poorly crafted transitions between independently very interesting material. Whenever I convince myself that they're not really all that bad, their earlier material convinces me otherwise.

Jamie's been very clear about that for years, but that's pretty new for you, Pleb.

Both BWP and Heritage have that feeling of coninuity and unison. However, Heritage has greater variety, whereas BWP is more innovative.

well, Famine sure doesn't have a feeling of continuity and unison.

I speak for the album as a whole. It has a beginning, an interlude and an ending. It has climax. It has relief. It's got a nice structure. Also, Famine slays, fight me.

i dont think its remotely close to best opeth and its hard to justify putting it on instead of something that came out in the 70s
but its good and one of the best sounding albums released recently
