Well, I don't think that having problems with it "initially" is bad. I mean, you always need to be challenged and discover new territories, so I think it's good. I remember saying that the drummer of TDEP had huge problems with doing "Manufacturing Discontent" first for Dissociation and imo it ended up being on of the best songs there.
Maybe the tables have turned (and yeah, Frank rules) and Abe and Steph are the leading ones in the upcoming album. tit for tat.

So I have 5 full listens so far and it's amazing much of this album is "in one ear, out the other". Can't tell if it's a grower or there's just not much to hold onto.
Mm, a little bit of both tbh. There IS some good stuff here. It is also somewhat of a grower, but some of the material is just kinda meh and subsequent listens won’t likely change that. But some of it is great.

Also this IS their worst album... Adrenaline is so disrespected these days
I like Adrenaline but absolutely think it’s their worst. Still a 3.5.

Adrenaline is way better than this

Yeah idk how people think this album is better than the one with Bored, Root, 7 Words, and Engine no9... regardless of it being “nu metal”
I honestly find Around the Fur and White Pony to be way more nu metal sounding than Adrenaline but what do I know

Fireal is the best track off of Adrenaline imo. Phenomenal song. That’s the song that showed what Deftones were capable of and an indicator of the awesomeness that was coming with subsequent albums.
I have absolutely no problem with it being nu Metal, I like plenty of nu Metal. And it is a good album! I love the raw, fierce, unbridled energy of it...but I just think Gore is more interesting. Adrenaline is straightforward and simple, but done very well. Fireal is the only truly phenomenal song off of that album imo.

i am allergic to nu metal so adrenaline is appalling to me
i recognize thats just a me thing tho i can understand liking it more than this, which has just weaker writing/production

Adrenaline and ATF are both worse than this imo, their early stuff has that stink of late-90s angst and overall comes off as very immature to me, whereas this is just kind of boring and safe.

Back to School however is an eternal bop, despite being perhaps the most nu-metal of their nu-metal era

ATF worse than this hell noooooo

I get Adrenaline being too angsty, but Around the Fur is a fucking classic. Headup is really the only track on there I can’t listen to anymore.

yeah i'm pretty firmly in the "Adrenaline is their worst" camp but ATF is indeed a classic. Agree that Headup is the only real "stinker" there

for me ATF's t/t is the stinker, sounds like a 'could-be' single for the record. Headup's got that hip-hop flavour to the verses that keeps it interesting with how heavy it all is.

Adrenaline rules. There's a crack-like vibe to the album they never duplicated.

prob cuz of how brittle and antsy the production sounds
|

Yeah the guitar tone makes me think of a bunch of rust and Chino's screams are more like a barking dog

yea but it's 1993 and your janky body language couldn't hide your heat under the oversized white shirt and jnco shorts
