Everything after this album is shit; it's just a matter of it being shit that has hardened and has lost most of its stench, or if it is absolutely steaming in some hellish heat.

Damn that was harsh.
I was about to argue just on principle, but eh it's too hot and ur probably right.

The most frustrating part about it for me is that I think Heritage is among their best work, so I know they are able to pull of that style perfectly, but they just don't. Hopefully they'll get back on track for the next one, saw an interview with Fred in which he said they're striving for the first quarter of 2019.

Yea, Heritage IS among their best

Heritage was great for a one-off experiment, but the problem is that it wasn't a one-off experiment. instead they've started milking the sound of an album that was originally intended to be a tribute to their inspirations and turning the whole band into one big dad prog tribute act.

What we can learn from Opeth and the star wars prequels is 'go all in on your stupid idea'. At least the reactions will be great.

I don't think you quite know what their intention at that time was. Mike tried to write something akin to Watershed and it felt forced, so he tried something else
Also I'd say that Pale Communion doesn't have too much in common with Heritage, the differences are quite huge.

Agreed about the differences between Heritage and PC. Heritage had that delicious jazzy feel (especially in the drums) that the later two just don't have. Would love to hear more of that!

^This so much. Heritage feels pretty evil and opethian too, much more than PC and Sorceress at least

Yeah, totally. And next to these stylistic issues I dislike the production of the last two, especially on Sorceress, yuck.

Well, I thought PC was pretty well produced. What's the matter with that one?
Sorceress' production though ... damn, Chrysalis is ruined because of that, a real shame

I'm not that good with the official terms, but the bass on PC sounds a bit too loud or stretched to me, like it's on the verge of exploding. It's a bit too warm and big, pumped up if you will. But it's miles better than Sorceress, agreed.

"I don't think you quite know what their intention at that time was. Mike tried to write something akin to Watershed and it felt forced, so he tried something else"
..and that something else ended up being a deliberate tribute to their influences, hence the name Heritage. read more than one interview.

I actually like this more than BWP, it’s not as good as the first 4 or GR though.

Hessian Peel is one of their best songs regardless

I actually read quite some interviews about Heritage, but you point is pretty valid, haha. But Heritage is too original in my eyes to be a tribute album (apart from Slither. not a fan of that song)
Hessian Peel probably their best song imo

Hessian Peel is amazing yeh. I know a lot of people dislike Hex Omega, but I've always had a soft spot for it. It has a very nice atmosphere.
