"I very much doubt future Deftones' shows are going to get less attendance irregardless of whether they tour right after or sometime after they drop the album."
That's a good point... the band is easily at a place now where they don't ever have to drop anything ever again and can just tour their existing discography and still make a ton of money. They wouldn't hurt themselves in any way by dropping the album now and starting the tour a couple months after, hell bands do that all the time even without the coronavirus holding them back.
Hell if they’re so worried about the money why don’t they just do a White Pony 20th anniversary tour instead.

That and they didn’t even really support Gore.
Sure they toured for it, but I caught them three times on that tour and they only ever played Prayers / Triangles and Rubicon.
Hopefully they throw more tracks from the new record into the rotation than they did last time.

In Hamburg they only played 3 songs as well. Those were Gore, (L)MIRL and Geometric Headdress which was pretty cool cuz it was not the singles.

They played Acid Hologram, (L)mirl, and Gore when I saw them a month or two after Gore dropped... and then only played Phantom Bride when I saw them again about a year after that.
Looking at setlistfm they’ve played 0 gore songs at their most recent shows. They played Smile and Gauze live for the first time tho, and plenty other songs for the “first time since 20XX” over the same time frame lol.

I think they are trying to distance themselves from Gore and they will probably regard it as a "darker" moment in their history or just generally an underwhelming record in their discography.
Chino and Sergio are probably the only ones in the band who loved it in the first place.

It's still a great record to me. More of a testament to their excellent discog than anything else.

Hearts/Wires is so good (2)
I have a feeling the new album is gonna blow us away. Kindof how Diamond Eyes did. This is going to be their late career high point/masterpiece. Mark my words. The tepid response to Gore obviously bothered them so they aren’t fucking around.

Relistening atm. This is somehow the misguided son of their late discography. Gotta say it holds up better than I remember similar to the self-titled. Only the production is still bothering me and pittura infamante. Never got the appeal of that song

Something about the chorus of "Prayers/Triangles" really bothers me, like you see the title and think "hmm, that's interesting, I wonder how that title ties into the lyrics" but then both words are just kind of, plopped into the chorus even though they don't really fit? It feels so artless idk, it's a pretty good hook but I just get a little annoyed whenever I hear it

why Sergio exactly?
imo they also don't play that much Gore cuz I think those songs just are not good live songs. or maybe they just give it some time. They were intentionally focussing on more odd songs live in recent years. However, I really like this album and pink lights in a live show rock

The chorus to prayers/triangles is among my least favorite moments on the album I agree

That’s true actually, Prayers is a good song, but the chorus is kinda listless. Holds it back from being the great song that it could have been.

I’m assuming you’ve listened to White Pony, self titled, Koi No Yokan, Saturday Night Wrist and Around the Fur? If not, listen to those first (in the order I listed them) before you check this out. It’s good, but it’s not as good as Diamond Eyes and is in fact their 2nd worst album.

Yeah ive listened to majority of their stuff, Diamond Eyes and White Pony being the favourites. Heard good shit about Yokan, only heard a few tracks off that one.

KNY is Diamond Eyes 2 electric boogaloo

Definitely check out KNY, great album. Has some of their very best songs (Rosemary, Tempest, Leathers, Entombed).
But you’re right, White Pony is their best. Then I’d go with self titled in second, Diamond Eyes in third.

So I have 5 full listens so far and it's amazing much of this album is "in one ear, out the other". Can't tell if it's a grower or there's just not much to hold onto.
