the value you place in lyrics in hip-hop is directly proportional to how lame a person you are.
basic science.

No bad lyrics are bad. I.e. the vast majority of Kanyes

So Sach if lyrics aren't an important factor, do you base your judgement of rap/hip hop albums primarily on the beats? As dope as a beat may be it will never redeem a track with awful lyricism, at least not for me. Especially since most hip hop artists get a third party to produce the beats for them anyway.

what does it matter if a 3rd party produces the beat? especially in Kanye's case, it certainly isn't for a lack of talent in beat-making. he's like a director of a movie. sure he isn't doing all of the special effects physically himself, but they're done completely under his guidance and direction and it's the same for most rappers

when it comes to lyrics, yes hip hop traditionally places more emphasis on lyrics than some genres, but it certainly isnt the be all, end all. it's evolved past pure lyricism a long time ago. seriously, if everything about the song is dope except for the lyrics, that's it, it's a bad song? c'mon man

"everything about the song"

You make it sound like there are 20 instruments involved. There are beats and there's lyrics in a traditional hip hop song. So yeah some people are put off when the lyrics are shit/cringey whatever. For example a good beat alone for me is almost never going to make me listen to a song if the lyrics are absolute whack. The beat alone can't interest me.

Then again different tastes, so if you care more about the beat then it's your preference. I happen not to.

In a *traditional* song. Yeah some artist may include piano, samples etc., but that doesn't mean all of them.

What

I never said it was, I said I simply don't enjoy songs where the lyrics aren't to my liking. It ruins a song for me I don't care about the other parts of the song. What else don't you understand ?

i mean ur talking about instruments and pianos and shit as if they somehow enhance a song and in the process reduced hip hop to simply beats -> lyrics

it's much more nuanced than that. u can not like a song because of bad lyrics, w/e thats ur prerogative but u cant say it's because hip hop is all about lyrics. it's not. u don't like it because you're all about lyrics

Ok where have I said it's all about lyrics ? Quote me.

Sach said that lyrics aren't an integral part at which I lol'ed. Doesn't mean I think lyrics is all there is to a hip hop song.

I agree Kanye's real talented in the beat making department, and lyrics aren't the be and all end all, but they're a vital part of the overall music particularly In a genre like hip hop whether we're talking 90's or 2010's. So I could never justify giving an album with dope beats but dodgy lyrics more than about a 3.5. But that's just how I see it.

it's not an integral part either, that's what i'm saying. not that it's literally all about the lyrics
